1,5k disposable income a month is enough

AIBU to think that a disposable income of £1,500 a month is enough for a family of four? That is after all living costs, fixed monthly bills and food/household essentials.
DH and I were a bit unfortunate and made a major life change just before the pandemic, and this is what our household income has now been boiled down to.

DH is majorly stressed out and says its not enough, I say it's OK for now. We are able control all the other costs with careful planning and even save a bit! We don't live in a big city and our kids are still primary school age. What do you think?

It seems quite a generous amount of pocket money.

I think a lot of people will wonder how you have high paid jobs, if you really have the low level of critical thinking and empathy that your post indicates.

Totally agree.

OP you are incredible, must be over privileged. I have lived on much less than that as total income and raised four children.
Many people have a LOT less, you are very insensitive.

I think the op has had a hard time here.
She doesn’t have £1500 to spare!
Car repairs, petrol, kids clothes are what most people would list in their essential expenses.
It’s a dp problem.
He is probably feeling the emotional impact of the status shift from now being a lower income worker.
I also get a sense of an undertone that he liked having a lot of personal expenditure that op was unaware of, perhaps spending on things she would disapprove of? The shared knowledge of their new expenditure seems to be unduly stressing him.

That's more than my DH brings home a month from his new job that he had to get because he got made redundant ftom his much higher paid job and I'm furloughed, we are a family of five so I'd say yes that's more than plenty. We don't have a bean once the bills and food have been accounted for

Oh to have £1500 pocket money a month...I can’t even begin to imagine!

anonacatchat · 18/09/2020 23:49

I’m sorry but it it’s a sensitive topic for some they don’t need to read the post .

That’s like me saying people talking about pregnancy and contraception is triggering so people shouldn’t speak about it 😂. The title is clear !

*conception 🤣 wine !

@myglorioushairdo if your savings were less than 16k (I assume they were as you spent them in 4 months) you could have claimed Universal Credit. You wouldn't have got much but the amount would have gone up as your savings dwindled. Too late now but worth knowing if something goes wrong in the future.

Myglorioushairdo · 20/09/2020 09:52

@motherofadog oh really? Never thought we'd be eligible for something. Yes our savings were less than 10k,and as well as living costs we had some expensive sudden costs pop up which would've been fine normally, but not when there's no income..
But we are now working again thank goodness 🙏 Can't wait to start saving again. DH is still panicking. Didn't dare to show him this thread for the bollocking I got from everyone 😂 FYI I just broke my glasses this weekend, so bye bye another £250ish of 'disposable' income..

I assume you are taking the piss with this post and just floating about your wealth.

Notnownotneverever · 20/09/2020 10:02

Myglorioushairdo · 20/09/2020 12:03
