Has anyone watched it.?

Would it be unreasonable to chuck iPads in the bin after watching it, I allow my 6 year old to watch kids you tube sometime , and now I never want him to pick up a iPad again. Did anyone else feel this way after watching it.

Watching that has made me worried for the negative effect it's going to have on my kids as they grow older

Did anyone else realise how much we are being manipulated and that our time is the product.?

It was quite disturbing to watch.

It’s completely terrifying for many reasons!

What really struck home tho was that the developers they talked to don’t let their kids have screen time

Indoctro · 16/09/2020 10:11

Yeah I agree , it's so hard though with kids when other kids at school are on the internet, I don't want mine to feel left out but also I don't want them a slave to a phone either and it effecting their mental health

I honestly had no idea about how they manipulate you like that.

there's another thread about this.. yes its terrifying

awsomer · 16/09/2020 10:38

I haven’t seen it. What is it?

purpleme12 · 16/09/2020 10:41

What is this about?
I've heard this mentioned a few times now

BlueThistles · 16/09/2020 11:01

Indoctro · 16/09/2020 12:47

It's a new documentary that's just been released on Netflix

I think anyone who uses the internet needs to watch it so they understand what's going on behind the scenes so to speak

Meh.
In the past people used to say the same about reading books.
I don't like my kids watching YouTube as they watch total crap, but I don't always spend my time most productively either.

BlueThistles · 19/09/2020 20:07

watched it, with my teenagers, both were suspicious of their phones etc after this. One has set a daily time limit reminder in her phone for SM. Its set at 30 mins and tonight its turned off.

Fascinating and alarming Film, thanks for the heads up.

Yes I watched it and have deactivated my Instagram, had deactivated fb at start of lockdown. Feels quite liberating not checking social media.

Yes, I agree with you Louise000000. I deactivated my fb 3 years ago. I was going through a few mental health issues and I took the advice to get off fb Best decision ever. Its so liberating. I have found that if something is important people will tell me.
TacosTuesday · 19/09/2020 22:04

Yes it's scary and YANBU. These issues have bubbling under the surface for the past few years but are coming into the mainstream as more and more people in the industry voice their concerns. I have been following for a couple of years and been uneasy for some time. It particularly angers me a great deal that people "in the know' in the industry have protected their own children and not let them have access to screens etc- because they know how addictive they're literally designed to be. This is not remotely similar to books in any way.

TacosTuesday · 19/09/2020 22:11

Your attention equates to revenue - the more time you're plugged into a device on an app spending your time seeing ads and giving your opinions through e.g likes and site interaction (data collateral) the more £££ can be made from you.

BlueThistles · 19/09/2020 22:12

we're okay on here? right 😱

FlatShite · 19/09/2020 22:17

I got rid of fb, twitter and insta after I watched it, don't really use youtube or any other sm.

Surely it can't be as simple as that though? Unless you literally stop using the internet altogether they can track you somehow?

catnoir1 · 19/09/2020 22:24

I wast her this a few days ago.

It's frightening what's happening in the background that you don't even think about.

I deleted a fair few social media apps after watching it.

BlueThistles · 19/09/2020 22:28

I think the most interesting decision was that not one of those people allow their kids to go online.

WidowTwonky · 19/09/2020 22:33

Yes it’s not just social media - it’s anything online.

catnoir1 · 19/09/2020 22:37

I meant I watched this a few days ago

InterstellarDrifter · 19/09/2020 22:45

It was fascinating. Horrifying at the same time. Especially when they were talking about the power of using Facebook to literally incite killing and murder.
And how we, as the product, continuously manipulated.

Aloneagainornot · 19/09/2020 23:17

As they say there is no such thing as a free lunch. You are the lunch.

Emeraldshamrock · 19/09/2020 23:22

Sounds interesting. Is it child preteen friendly.

grey12 · 19/09/2020 23:30

It was terrifying but I wouldn't throw your kids iPad away. Just make sure the apps you have in there are good. And put time parental controls.

I was just thinking yesterday how we no longer have encyclopaedias or boomboxes or a few other things. We have replaced them with smart devices. As I kid I loved checking the encyclopaedia/science books/atlas my parents had on the shelf. I wouldn't want to deny that access to knowledge to my kids

Indoctro · 20/09/2020 06:58

@Emeraldshamrock

Yes it's suitable for kids to watch I would say. Probably do them good to watch it

There is one scene that upset my kids though - dead bodies including children in Myanmar. It was upsetting but very brief.
