Reuseable sanitary protection?

Sanpro · 15/09/2020 20:42

I’m shamelessly utilising the footfall here to ask for your opinion on the best reuseable sanitary towels. I hope you don’t mind, I’m doing it for the environment!

I want to switch to them but they can be quite pricey and I don’t want to outlay a ton on something that isn’t good.

Anyone have any recommendations?

Also, I know people love the Mooncup and similar but I can’t get on with them. Especially with my new heavy postpartum periods.

Thank you kindly in advance.

Whichever ones you get, I would recommend going for ones with a grey or black absorbent bit. I got mine from Amazon and they still look as good as new after a good 6 months. My last lot had a white absorbent bit and they looked grotty very quickly.

OP, if you don't get on with menstrual cups, have you tried reusable menstrual discs? I tried 4 different cups and couldn't get on with them for different reasons, then tried a disc (Lumma) and it works so much better for me. I couldn't wear the cups for longer than about 3-4 hours. Not sure why - maybe suctioning to my cervix? - and can wear the disc for 8. I've heard the disposable discs are meant to be comparable to the reusable ones too, so easy to try them without the outlay of trying another reusable.

I use Love Luna from Sainsbury's which I find are good. They are black so no issue with staining.

I think the next 25% off sale is in October so might be an idea to check if they are in the sale. Normally around £10

Interesting reading the comments about washing. If you put them in a normal wash can you use fabric softener in that wash or does it reduce absorbency like with bath towels?

This is the last one I got from raghag Grin

If you want Honour My Flow at a reasonable price from an independent seller this one is very good.

She also does a few eco-friendly pamper stuff if you need a bit of a mood boost too. If you're in Manchester there is a shop in Afflecks.

I use menstrual cup with period pants.

I completely my first full period a couple of weeks ago with no disposables. I started buying and using reusable pads part time summer last year. I tried the Bloom and Nora ones first, they're OK but they don't fold down very small, they're quite bulky and the wings are quite short. I then ordered some from the Floating Lotus. They're really comfortable, the wings are longer, they fold down small and they are charcoal topped so don't seem to stain. They arrived the very next day (I didn't order from Amazon and don't havr Amazon Prime, but a label onthe packaging said they came via Amazon Prime). They're not bulky.

I haven't leaked with either during the day. I did have a little (tiny amount) leakage on to my pants from the back overnight once or twice with the Bloom and Nora but I do move around a fair bit at night and I don't wear tight pants. I almost always have some leakage over night with disposables on to the back of my pants. I also leak on to the front wity disposables when sitting up first thing in the morning with a mini gush as any pooled blood exits. My periods are light.

Both brands have washed well with no staining. I rinse them if I'm at home after use, at work I just put them in a small waterproof bag and store in my handbag. I put them all in a waterproof bag until the end of my period and then wash them all together, along with the bags, on a cold cycle. My period is short (about 3 days) so don't know how they would cope not being rinsed out if it was much longer.

If you decide to give cups another go, do the quiz at putacupinit.com/quiz/ it recommended a Lunette for me and I get on with it perfectly. I was hesitant about the initial outlay and having to buy several to get it right but this helped enormously, there's vouchers too :)

@aureliacecilia

I like Bloom and Nora - the bamboo ones.
This !! And fern. I love both. I get them from babipur

Honor your flow are great.

Expensive but she does a happy hour 8-9 on a sunday night.

Tcs eco are also really good. You can buy directly from tcs eco or via earthwise girls.

I like lady days too. Slim soft and hold a fair bit. Also available from.earthwise girls or direct from tneir own site.

Word if warning with cheeky wipes. I found the cotton pads realky didn't sit right. There was no kinda drfimate point the wings folded over properly seemed to kinda look a bit wonky. But I could have just had an awkward one i guess or not got the right kind of pants and the fleece ones are not freat if you live in a hard water area rhey go crispy quickly and dont rescue as well as the other brands with the vinegar..

Homestead Emporium are amazing but you probably won't be able to find them. If you do grab them. Immediately.

I have a couple from luna landings and I like those too. Available via etsy.

QueenPaws · 15/09/2020 23:29

Didn't like hiccups and juice, the shape didn't work for me

Thank you everyone for taking the time. So many things to try. I’ve got some birthday money, which I’ll spend on them. ☺️ It’s great to see they’re so widely used, too.

@MrsSiba it reduces absorbency. I just use washing powder and a bit of the dettol laundry stuff
