Not comfortable about returning to Cubs...

I’m a Cub Leader. We’re looking at getting back to face to face indoor meetings pretty soon. National guidelines say that we can have 15 Cubs, plus Leaders/Young Leaders, in our hut at a time. The Cubs come from different Schools and Year Groups.

I’m in my 60’s and I have damaged lungs from a childhood illness. Even a common cold becomes bronchitis, when I had (real) flu some years ago I ended up in hospital with pneumonia - so yes, I am worried about COVID. But we don’t have enough Leaders to cover if I don’t go back and I’m being perceived by some as a bit of a ‘party pooper’.

Am I worrying unnecessarily? I don’t know if I’m being over cautious. I don’t want to mess things up for everyone but I don’t want to risk my health. I’m pretty robust, good hiker, climber etc so people think I’m fit and well.

What do you think?

YABU = stop worrying about a tiny risk and crack on with it
YANBU = you’re right to be concerned, your health comes first

Thank you

@SomewhereEast...you’re right, it probably would! But when everyone except you is really excited about going back, and your issues have been rather brushed aside in the general enthusiasm, it’s been very reassuring to get these responses, especially from other Leaders.

My dd goes to a small ruralguide pack. I doubt it will restart as guide leader is retirement age.

I’m an ABSL and think you should absolutely decide what you are prepared to do. There is no reason to put yourself at a risk level you are unhappy with. If they are short of Leaders then with the new rules maybe other sections could help out or even the GSL. They could also just stay outside.

It’s a volunteer organisation, you decide what you are prepared to do.

No, you are not a sacrificial lamb! My son is in beavers and I’m not sure if his leader will be able to resume as she has health issues, parents can step up and share the work if they want it to go ahead

Ds1 is in Explorers. Its outside activities only, at least for the moment and one of his leaders has stepped down for health reasons, which is an utterly reasonable thing for him to do. Its wonderful that people give up their time to run these groups at the best of times, but they are certainly not worth risking your health over.

In your place I don't think I would. If wait and see how things go. I'm in no rush to send mine back because they've only just started school etc.

Our group is hiring a cleaner for between other groups using it, we’ll have a box for cleaning as we go in the sessions as well.
To be honest I think it’s completely mad to be going back, and a lot to ask of volunteers, I understand the pressure you feel of not wanting to let them down but this is you health, your life and that’s more important.

I'm not even thinking about going back yet. I'm having to put all my energy into my school bubble. The paperwork is daunting and I'm over 60. I'm not sure if my unit will reopen.
