To think Mumsnet would be better with likes/upvotes

Sites like Reddit have the ability for users to up or downvote posts and replies to posts. An overwhelming number of downvotes leads to posts/replies becoming “hidden” and so a democratic vote basically decides which posts and replies can be seen rather than requiring moderators to step in and babysit.

Is this something that would work well on Mumsnet?

YABU- Mumsnet works fine as it is TYVM
YANBU- This feature should be added

That’s a good point. Although the viper’s nest that some threads turn into is, I’m sure, far more of a turn-off than a 👍🏻 or a 👎🏻

Maybe Mumsnet could add their own upvote/downvote system based on famed Mumsnet Emojis.

Perhaps you should post in Site Stuff.

Yes, I do think that some form of upvote/downvote system would allow people to see a genuine reflection of opinions/attitudes.

I think a good example of why I don't like this is any thread about race. There are some pretty unpleasant views voiced on MN about race but at least those can be challenged and countered (and deleted if necessary). I can just imagine the horror of a Meghan Markle thread with voting.

I'm often disagreeing with everyone else on threads and I do that knowing that someone needs to be able to fight their corner. If they can just downvote, particularly anonymously, I can see it being nasty.

I remember when the Guardian brought in 'recommends'. It made no difference at first, but over time the smart-alec comments took over. It's a real shame, because it used to be easy to find an interesting perspective on just about anything there. Now it's all just Twatter-style shouting.

Stuff.co.nz, big media site in NZ, got rid of upvoting / downvoting after the Christchurch terrorist massacre.

netsybetsy · 16/09/2020 10:16

On mumsnet every post stands on its own merit and you are free to decide for yourself which you agree with and which you don't.

Yes!

Lonelycrab · 16/09/2020 10:19

No, IMO it’s better off without that feature OP.

No thanks to nested comments and up/down voting. 👎🏻

Sanitisethat · 16/09/2020 10:45

It would be great. You get some viciously nasty responses on this site, and if they could be downvoted into oblivion it might make the experience less miserable for the poor poster who has become a victim of a viper attack.

ilovesooty · 16/09/2020 11:23

I don't want nested comments either.

If you see a comment that is “viciously nasty“ then report it to mnhq and they will remove it. We don’t need folks voting it down for that to happen. Anything like this is removed and quickly.

I am not seeing your issue, you post like mnhq let’s vicious nasty comments stand, they don’t.

Unless of course your definition of vicious and Nasty is different to everyone else’s.

I think that there are certain threads, certain boards even, where there is an echo chamber.
Where alternative viewpoints are laughed at and picked apart by everyone on the thread.
Or posters believe that anyone with an alternative point of view is ‘them’ infiltrating the thread again. I don’t post on those boards anymore, but I still lurk on them occasionally. It might be nice to 👍 the one or 2 people who plug away with a different point of view.

EmbarrassedUser · 16/09/2020 13:25

I’d quite like a thumbs up option on here. Sometimes I don’t have much to add but think that someone else has made a good point.

@EmbarrassedUser

I’d quite like a thumbs up option on here. Sometimes I don’t have much to add but think that someone else has made a good point.
Can you imagine though, people would be creating different identities to thumbs up themselves, then petty arguments breaking out “ well my comment is more popular than your comment, look I got three thumbs ups”

Guaranteed to happen.
