To go for new job?

I have been in my current job since March, two weeks before lockdown started. Went back in June. I wouldn't say I love the work but there are parts that I enjoy, I get on well with the other staff and I like the environment. It is however only VERY part time, 6 hours a week.

A possibility of a new job has now come up, 25 hours a week. Similar workplace but very different job. This one is what I initially wanted to do, but don't have a great deal of experience in it.

Of course there is a chance I wouldn't get the second job, but I'm just thinking ahead.

I'd feel quite bad leaving my current place, they've just had to recruit for more people to fill roles following COVID guideline changes, and several colleagues have resigned recently. Plus as I said I really do like my colleagues, which isn't always the case for me as I'm quiet and shy and have quite a dry sense of humour which can come off as standoffish, my current workmates seem to have seen through this! Also, leaving a job after only a few months doesn't seem quite...right?

The second job would definitely be better in terms of scope for progression, there's not really anywhere to "go" in my current job.

I'm just typing as I think really, but what would you do in my situation, supposing I was to get the second job?

Go for it. They have no loyalty to you or you to them. They will replace you tomorrow. You never know, you may get the job and they might offer you more hours to keep you if they are short staffed?

I’d go for the new job, 6 months is a reasonable amount of time to be in a job and if more hours would be better for you it would seem daft to stay at your current place.

If each one is complete days, can you fit both in to check out that you like the new one?
(check your contract to ensure you're not restricted from working elsewhere, but that would be weird for six and a bit hours)

6 hours a week is hardly leaving them in the lurch. If each of your colleagues did a tiny bit of your work, they wouldn’t even need you!
Go for the new job!

I'd also second PP's suggestion of asking for more hours if current employer is recruiting/replacing.

Thank you for your replies, I completely forgot I had posted this!

Unfortunately I can't ask for more hours, trying not to "out" myself but I guess I can't explain it, I'm an MDS in a primary school currently so the hours I do are all that I'm needed for! They're recruiting because now due to Covid we need one MDS per classroom which we didn't have before. The new job would be receptionist/admin/first aider in a different school.
