Theory Driving Test

Posting for traffic. DS sitting his theory test in 6 weeks time. Apart from reading Highway Code is there anything else he should be doing? It wasn't a thing when I passed so not sure what's best for him to do.

There’s an official app with quizzes. And also video clips for the hazard perception. He needs to practice those. Think app is about £5.

The quiz questions seem to cover more than the highway code. CPR technique, etc.

nattiee · 12/09/2020 23:08

passmytheory.co.uk I used this website before my theory and pretty much all the questions on there came up on my theory test. It was free to use but it was 11 years ago so it may have changed a lot since then.

JaJaDingDong · 12/09/2020 23:11

I agree with doing the practice questions on the app. Some of them are really odd.

Stefoscope · 12/09/2020 23:19

Definitely practice the hazard perception, there's a knack to timing when to click. I think the app (or CD Rom when I took it a few years back) has all the possible questions, so it's certainly worth working through the practice exams on that until he gets consistent passes.

Osirus · 13/09/2020 00:33

Absolutely download the app. It’s £5ish. I did several practice tests a day. By the time my test came around, I could answer 50 questions in 5 minutes, with 100% correct answers. There’s loads of hazard perception clips on there too.

I passed my test with full marks on the theory and just short of full marks on the hazard perception.

I don’t know how well I would have done without the app. I read the DVSA theory test book too.

Just make him aware that the questions on the actual test are usually worded slightly differently to the practice questions so he must read the questions very carefully.

Good luck!!

Osirus · 13/09/2020 00:35

With the hazard perception, I would practice the videos to get the knack of knowing when to click. You can click too early.

I clicked when I saw the hazard and then a second or two later, to make sure I got a mark.

Ariela · 13/09/2020 00:42

Download the official app, and get him to play it constantly on his phone until he consistently gets them all right. The exact same questions come up on the actual test apparently (DD got 100%).

With the hazard perception you have to click at the right moment - too soon it doesn't register and you get penalised for constant clicking apparently.

Student133 · 13/09/2020 00:45

You dont need to pay any money, search online for the much tests, theres about 20 sets of them, all of the possible questions. If he gets 95% reliably in all of them, and doesn't have a crap memory he'll pass first time. Also go on YouTube for the hazard perception (I didn't even k ow this was a thing, but I passed it).

Hazard perception is an absolute must to practice.

I didn't and failed. I was really upset...not because I failed but due to the cost. But came to realise it's an absolute scam.

My DH practiced online and failed.

He was (is) blue light trained on fire engines. He got the rest of his shift to take it, they failed too.

They all saw (as did I) the hazards earlier than than was expected so they didn't register.

tywysoges · 13/09/2020 01:09

I used theory test pro, it’s free for members for most libraries (there’s a list on their website, you login with your library details).

ParlezVousWronglais · 13/09/2020 01:09

Absolutely practice hazard perception. I failed first time, needed to practice it a lot. It is difficult. Every day for a few weeks. Passed second go.

Thanks everyone. Will get the app downloaded and look into the other suggestions. It's not helped by the fact that I couldn't get a test in Scotland this year!!!! So we're off to Carlisle as that was the nearest place we could get one. Really hope he is prepared as it's a 5 hr round trip!!!

App definitely!

SockYarn · 13/09/2020 09:11

A lot of the theory multiple choice questions are really, really easy. DS is learning too and we've looked at them too. Things like "How should you dispose of an old car battery?"

A - bury it in the garden
B - take it to a recycling centre
C - give it to a friend
D - burn it

Some are trickier but there are lots where you can discount at least two options right away, leaving you with 50/50 if you're unsure.

Hazard perception is a lot trickier and we will be getting DS to practice. Lots.
