I find when I agree with someone I quote post which makes thread longer.
I think that a 'like' button would be useful....do you agree?

YABU pointless
YANBU would be useful

I find also that people forget to quote but copy it and repeat....a like button could save this

Easier then to read the whole thread

Another popular forum moved away from this, as it tends to be used for ganging up on people.

MrsJemimaDuck · 12/09/2020 13:18

I would love to go through and just like or “react” to people like Facebook. A way to show support without needing to comment.

Thisisnotnormal69 · 12/09/2020 13:19

Nooo I think it would over complicate

NewAutumnName · 12/09/2020 13:23

If only like and no other emoji eg not angry then couldn't gang up?

Every time this has come up before, the idea has been rejected by users (once by MNHQ poll which was resolutely anti)

I don't see how it would benefit this site, which is about chatting and interacting, to make it easy for people to stop chucking in their tuppence ha'pworth by actually contributing.

And it would end up as a popularity contest. And I really don't think that would be a good idea at all

SchrodingersImmigrant · 12/09/2020 13:48

Unlike button is a must too.

AdaColeman · 12/09/2020 13:58

I think a "like" button would ring the death knell for discussion, debate and chatter on the site. It would be yet another step towards general dumbing down.

DramaAlpaca · 12/09/2020 14:02

No. This is a Chat site. The whole idea is that we chat, talk, discuss, debate, argue... I'm not in favour of a Like button. This isn't FB or the comments section of a trashy newspaper, and long may it stay that way.

Gancanny · 12/09/2020 14:05

If you want a like button then Facebook and Reddit are that way >>>>

The voting buttons are already bad enough where umpteen people will click YABU/YANBU without actually saying why.

ValidUser · 12/09/2020 14:20

I'd like to see thread capacity increase if this can't happen. Loads of people post to quote and say "this" and it can lead to threads filling up really quickly.

I can see advantages and disadvantages.

NewAutumnName · 12/09/2020 15:12

I didn't realise that there was a mumnet pole.
Range of opinions.
I like reading threads and often think yes this answer sums me up... I often use the quote facility.

I soon learnt to ignore the ones just out for a fight, some do I think, and interact with those able to make their point without nastiness.

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 12/09/2020 15:13

I wouldn’t want one, only if, as someone said you can have an unlike one too.

NewAutumnName · 12/09/2020 15:16

Oops spell check poll not poleShock

OP posts:
giantangryrooster · 12/09/2020 15:29

I think pole would be just as good Grin.

A dislike button would be more mumsnetty, but no i don't agree, just making posters aim for likes.

MarshaBradyo · 12/09/2020 15:30

No thanks people should type not like

GunsAndShips · 12/09/2020 15:34

I've been here for 16 yrs and this gets debated fairly regularly and the general consensus is no, use your words.

You wouldn't shorten threads because people quote to disagree as much as agree or to try "gotcha" somebody. Plus the non-RTFTers and the bitch ploppers and on and on.

AlCalavicci · 12/09/2020 15:43

I tend to just use a thumbs up or smile if I agree with some one .

I would like a 'go back to this post ' button , I know we have bookmarks which are great but there have been a few threads that I have joined , esp long ones when I have thought I would like to know more about this , I have the answer to this but have not read the full thread so dont want to fling my opinion in yet book marking one is fine but if there is a couple of post I would like to go back to a reminder of them and the posters name would be great

EPPM · 12/09/2020 16:20

I wouldn't want this. It's been rejected dozens of times so far. It's not hard to type "good post, GunsAndShips" or "What MarshaBrady said".

BabyLlamaZen · 12/09/2020 16:22

I think it could make people feel overwhelmed and may do more harm than good. Aibu already gets nasty enough.

Smallsteps88 · 12/09/2020 16:22

This is not Facebook. I’m already unhappy about the vote function. No like button please.

You could take a screenshot of the post?

Agree. If I want Facebook I’ll go to Facebook.

Not overly keen on the Quote function either, mostly because no one bothers to edit what is being quoted so I often have to read the reply then read the quote to figure out the content/context of the reply. Tiresome and really interrupts the flow of reading.

I realise I’m typing this using the quote function. That was deliberate. Grin

Smallsteps88 · 12/09/2020 16:44

I didn’t know you could edit the quote!

Undies1990 · 12/09/2020 16:48

I suppose if you want a "like" button, it would need to be balanced with a "dislike" button. I don't think MN HQ I'll do it though because of perceived bullying.
