To be worried he's fallen for a scam?

My dad has just rang me to tell me how he's been picked to take part in some Corona tracking scheme. He had to ring them and provide details and they'll send him a test kit out soon. He's 77 and I'm not sure how they picked him or got his details.

I've had a very quick Google and can't find anything about it online. He said the woman on the phone was American which makes me wonder about scams.

Does anyone know if this might be legit? I'm calling in to my parents in a while so will have a look at the letter.

Thank you

I got the exact same letter yesterday and I’m 42.

We were ‘randomly selected’ by the ONS for 4 x weekly tests at home, followed by once a month for a further year.
The 4 weekly ones now done.

The original approach was by letter, but giving initial details, plus making the appointments, were done over the phone.

We got £25 vouchers each per test - could be spent in a wide selection of shops.

That one's fine. My daughter has done it.

ElementalIllusion · 12/09/2020 12:39

We’ve had that exact letter too.

We hadn’t signed up for anything beforehand.

DH got that letter this week too.

Twigletfairy · 12/09/2020 12:50

I had one of those about a month ago. Was legit

cheesecurdsandgravy · 12/09/2020 12:51

Another legit confirmation here :)

pepperaunt · 12/09/2020 12:52

That looks like the letter my DH and I both got

My aunt has done this. She waited in all day for the courier to collect the swabs and they didn’t turn up. The swabs had to be binned. She was offered the chance to repeat it but declined.

QuestionableMouse · 12/09/2020 12:58

Thanks folks. I feel a lot better now.

I had the same letter. I suggest you look up the details through an independent source eg imperial.ac.uk or ipsos moro web page to check it was the same phone number, as scammers might well copy the legit letter and replace with different phone numbers if they wanted to target vulnerable individuals

RiftGibbon · 12/09/2020 13:05

@QuestionableMouse

Right I've seen the letter and feel slightly better. They didn't ask for bank details.
Yes - this is genuine.
