Is this the norm? It's for a restaurant. She sent her cv and they said to send a photo as it is needed.

Hmmmm..... I would have leapt at nefarious reasons myself..... Except my husband was asked to provide a photograph the last time he applied for a job, which was in a shop.

He got the job. We joked it was because he was so slim and gorgeous (I mean, he is, or course...) but to be brutally honest, subsequent hires were not. Whatever reason they were asking for photographs, it wasn't to weed out the ugly ones....

I don’t think I’ve ever had a job interview where a photograph wasn’t part of the application process. Along with a photocopy of a passport/driving licence. As far as I can remember it was so that they knew you weren’t committing identity fraud or something.

That is not generally the case in the UK. It is dodgy from an equality and discrimination perspective. Sometimes you are asked to bring photo I.d. to interview, but there is absolutely no need to ask for a photograph at the application stage.

Aren’t all job applications like this?

I can’t remember applying for a job without being asked for my photo.
Spent a fortune in my local photo booth. But I did have a lot of jobs

Dd and Ds are the same. I think only supermarket applications have been without photos.

Al1Langdownthecleghole · 12/09/2020 13:49

Some Companies like people to fit their brand. My blonde blue-eyed DD was approached in Hollister a few years ago about applying for a job...

IANAL, but my understanding is that it is legal to hire Italian staff for an authentic pizza restaurant, but not so if photos are used to avoid interviewing people who are BAME.

AlCalavicci · 12/09/2020 13:55

Pp
Ime in the UK people are not asked for there photos on applications but are asked to proved gov recognised ID at the interview but that did not necessarily mean photo ID it can also be a birth or adoption certificate any of the forces paperwork youngsters who have just left school letter from the headteacher can also be accepted.
Also of course things are driving licences and passports that do have photo ID on them are also accepted

polkadotpjs · 12/09/2020 14:07

Sadly I fear it's because they want a certain set of faces. Our local bars/cafes only seem to hire beautiful young things. Slim too. Nose piercing a benefit it seems - I suppose they see this as just alternative enough to be interesting

Just out of interest, were the subsequent hires from a mixture of ethnic backgrounds? Were any of them disabled? Was the range of 'attractiveness' comparable between the male and female staff?

This is a photo of me - just to officially provide categorical proof that I couldn't possibly be fraudulently claiming to be somebody that I'm not....

Bear in mind my applications have been to prison settings, so when you show up to the interview, they have already gathered all sorts of info about you!

You use MY photo on your CVs? Oh the cheek!
