To think no, we aren't heroes

I'm a junior doctor, who was redeployed to the covid wards. It was really traumatic.

We got claps, called heroes, rainbows.

I'm not a hero.

I'm a normal person, who was forced to work in unsafe conditions without adequate preparation or planning. Heroes makes out that we are superhumans, without basic needs.

I did all I could in the situation. All I could wasn't good enough. That haunts me now.

I believe I have PTSD now. I am so worried I am going to be thrust into this hell again, and have not been able to access treatment.

Aibu to think we aren't heroes, but normal people with normal needs, like a safe and supportive working environment?

@hibbledibble the government encouraged talk of NHS heroes and made analogies with war / fighting to account for the deaths of NHS workers. There was talk of sacrifice as it made their deaths seem like a noble thing to do, just like a soldier dying. This was all to distract from the fact that there was not enough adequate PPE, protection or testing at the time.

I want to thank you for speaking out and for your work. I hope you get access to the mental health treatment you deserve. I will show my thanks with my vote in the next general election and will support a political party who have decent policies to protect the NHS. There are lots of people who won’t forget how people working in the NHS, care homes and police were totally and utterly let down by this government. I hope the government and advisors are held to account for their actions.

Ugh yes, the using analogies of war to make deaths sound inevitable. I have had colleagues become seriously unwell, and some die. I hope their will be an enquiry regarding this, to examine how many HCP deaths were preventable.
