Netflix movie cuties

Anyone seen this movie on netflix yet? It's described as a coming of age story about a girl who joins a free spirited dance troupe. There is a petition doing the rounds to get it removed as apparently its overtly sexualizing children and comparisons to paedophilia.
Full disclosure, haven't seen it yet. Here is the trailer

Hope that works okay.

They’re channelling their inner Mary Whitehouse

GroundAlmonds · 17/10/2020 07:46

I sensed the implication that the former is "bad" and "stifling" and the latter is "freeing" and "playful". Perhaps the film itself is more balanced, but the trailer certainly was not.

I watched it last week on the basis that I couldn’t reasonably criticise unless I had.

It’s a well made film.

No, you’re wrong there. It was more about young second generation immigrants being caught between the two misogynistic cultures they saw around them. When they perform their dance routine in public at one point, they get a disapproving reaction from the audience. The “dancing” is pretty horrendous. It was uncomfortable to watch but the director wasn’t portraying it uncritically.

It is worth debating whether the film was suitable for broadcast/ streaming and whether it should have been made in the way that it was. It’s not an exploitative film in intent. However, you really do need to see it to express an opinion.

GroundAlmonds · 17/10/2020 07:46

Sorry for the editing fail.

LavaCake · 17/10/2020 08:02

I don’t see how you can realistically have a discussion about a film you haven’t seen.

LavaCake · 17/10/2020 08:07

It’s also interesting that everyone who has actually seen it has a nuanced appreciation for it, and everyone frothing in outrage about it hasn’t actually watched it Hmm

SeasonFinale · 17/10/2020 08:12

I watched it to see what the fuss was about.

The trailer is very misleading and is a slight fraction of the film.

It does indeed show the sad story of a youngster being exploited and how easy it is for this to happen. But in no way does it glorify it. The complaints are coming from people who haven't seen it.

DifficultPifcultLemonDifficult · 17/10/2020 08:12

I watched it, and then i watched it again with my daughters.

I read the outrage from all the people who had seen a clip, but I thought the concept of the film sounded interesting.

It has led to some very intersting discussions between my daughters and I, and it was thought provoking.

I really think if people are going to jump on the bandwagon and sign petitions and say how awful the film is, then they need to watch it first.

Ace56 · 17/10/2020 09:34

Another one here who has watched it and actually thinks it’s a good film.

As others have said, the theme is more centred around cultural differences and the struggle of a young girl trying to fit in in a western culture, mixing with the ‘wrong’ crowd etc.

The main girl is a very good actress - I hope the start of her acting career isn’t blighted because of the criticism this film has faced.

Thisisworsethananticpated · 17/10/2020 11:23

I thought it was a good film
It’s not promoting either culture , both have flaws
There was a scene when the aunt came in and I was thinking fuck as though it would be FGM
But she was teaching her to cook

I do think they could have reduced the body shots And dance shots significantly however - and maintained the impact and message
I say that for the fuss generated when children are involved

HelloMissus · 17/10/2020 11:25

The film is about the exploitation of girls.

SharonasCorona · 17/10/2020 11:30

I haven’t been able to bring myself to watch it. There was a thread a few weeks about it and one poster made a comment that I still remember, which is why a talented black female director can only get the chance to make a film if it’s exploiting young girls (including the black girl who is the lead).

As a child immigrant I think I would relate to the film but I am worried about the exploitation.

Leaannb · 17/10/2020 11:35

A Tyler County Texas Grand Jury has indicted the movie for promotion of lewd visual material depicting a child

SharonasCorona · 17/10/2020 11:37

Ah Texas, the third worst state for women’s right. I do wonder about their intentions.

MorganKitten · 17/10/2020 11:47

@user127819

Well, yes, I think we can all agree that she shouldn't have got death threats. I don't see how her sex is relevant here?

A trailer is supposed to represent a film and to inform a decision to watch it or not, so I don't think it's unreasonable to make assumptions about the film based on the trailer.

Considering the hundreds of people involved in the production of the film and the number of people who would have seen the trailer and description before their release, I'm not sure that a simple apology is quite enough here.

Her sex is important as it’s based on her life story.

I’ve seen it and got the message behind it. I also want to know if people upset about the film were just as upset about Dance Moms which in my opinion is worse.

ZoeTurtle · 17/10/2020 12:07

It's a very good film. The people who are outraged about it without having watched it are probably too thick to understand it, even if they did bother to watch it.

Mothertocrazy91 · 17/10/2020 13:06

It’s actually quite an eye opening film people pick clips out of context and share them. Dance moves / clothes wise etc I saw worse on dance moms years ago !

Mothertocrazy91 · 17/10/2020 13:07

@MorganKitten I agree re watching dance moms as an adult I actually found uncomfortable.

tillytown · 17/10/2020 17:32

ZoeTurtle the people who were outraged were probably reacting to a misleading trailer that had little girls thrusting their crotches into the camera, hopefully you're not too thick to understand that

Branleuse · 18/10/2020 08:34

I also watched it to see whether it deserved the controversy. It doesnt. Its really brave and a brilliant film
