To get annoyed about pink skipping ropes?

My little boy is six, and desperately wants a skipping rope. It is the latest craze at school, and he claims that he has no-one to play with because everyone is skipping (we're taking that with a pinch of salt, but I do worry). Anyway, we have trawled every flipping shop in Cork, and the only skipping ropes to be had are pink, or glittery, or just plain girly! WHY is so bloody impossible to get a bog standard ordinary GENDER FECKING NEUTRAL skipping rope?

Most post offices and local newsparents, and the supermarkets such as Asda, sell non coloured skipping ropes - rope and wooden handles. I see far more like that than coloured ones TBH - and they are far cheaper.

"why is pink not gender-neutral?"

What world do you live in??

We don't have an ELC in Cork, and I just know that as soon as I order one online, the craze will probably be over. I might have to anywat though.

And my smallie can't be persaded that pink is gender neutral I'm afraid.

Wait til your son is 6, send him to school with a pink skipping rope and then you'll see how "gender neutral" pink is.

glastocat · 07/10/2007 20:51

Oh good grief. Of course all colours should be gender neutral, and may have had different meanings in different eras etc. The fact is in our society pink=girl, and while I'm not too happy about these stupid designations, I am sadly unable to explain to my small boy why he should not be bothered if his skipping rope is pink/sparkly. God knows I tried to be as gender neutral as possible when he was younger, but now he's having none of it.

We've got two - one multicoloured, one green. I think the green one was ELC, can't remember where the other one is from. Not even sure I've seen a pink skipping rope otherwise our two would be pink as it's dd2's favourite colour.
It's all very well saying pink shouldn't be seen as a girl's colour, but the truth is that's how it is perceived today, and our children have to inhabit that world.

Go to Scats country store, or equivalent. Look for their reels of rope, choose one that looks about the right weight, buy the appropriate length. Tie a knot on each end as a handle. Bingo, skipping rope, butch as you like.

That's not a bad idea actually Nobiggy - might do that!

I miss ELC now though.

Oi - Cork is waaaaay nicer than sodding Limerick! .

I don't know what there is no ELC here - I think there was but it shut down just before I moved here.
