Downsizing from house to flat, can i get your stories & advice

After years of agonising we've sold our 5 bed detached house and are almost at exchange on a 2 bed apartment. The house was way too big for us and we spent all our money and time on it. We are permanently skint,, always having to do DIY or garden bits and still never enough in the kitty to do the improvements we need.

We took a good offer on ours and found a lovely low maintenance character apartment in a nice village not far from us.

The new apartment is actually the exact same size m2, but laid out in a more 'living' way rather than loads of bedrooms.

It will mean being mortgage free, not having to have a lodger any more, time to spend on things we like and enjoy, holidays again(no holidays since we moved here), weekend time which isn't filled with house and garden jobs, money for hobbies etc, no more scrimping for every penny and constantly setting up plans to go debt free..

But now i'm crapping myself we're doing the wrong thing and will regret it. We won't have a private garden any more (lovely big shared grounds tho), there is not a huge amount we can do to add value to the apartment, i'm also worried about living so close to other people again. I'm also worried we are being short sighted and if we just stuck it out for 5-10 years we'd be mortgage free here too.

Please tell me your good and bad downsizing stories and advice!!

I downsized from 5 bed to 2 bed flat 6 years ago. No regrets easier to keep tidy/clean. More time to spend on enjoying yourself instead of maintaining your home. Clear out your loft first. You probably won't have one in a flat.

You won't regret it but be prepared for getting rid of a lot of stuff before you move. In any case 5 - 10 years is a long time to stick it out in a house that is too big for you without any holidays etc and being mortgage free is bliss. Good luck.
