Help me identify this scratching noise coming from my windows

There is a scratching noise coming from the plastic in my conservatory. I have had a look outside and there is a covering on the front of the upvc that has come out and an entrance probably an inch and a half all the way around exposed. I initially thought mouse that's in there as there's very loud scratching but its daytime and doesn't let up overly if I bang it. Then I thought potentially wasps? Or bees? I have no idea? I don't want to leave it so that if it is a mouse it can come in but that leads me to my next question, how on earth am i going to get rid of whatever it is? Please help???

I think I'd get a pest controller out. But then I'm a wuss when it comes to scratchy unknown critters in dark places.

vraimenthan · 10/09/2020 14:02

@fatcatthincat I was thinking past control but I am skinter than skint and will definitely last resort, ugh I feel so anxious just trying to work out what it is

I'm not in the UK so things may be different, but our household insurance covers pest control.

FatCatThinCat · 10/09/2020 14:06

Other than that I'd be tempted to pour loads of water down the hole to flush it out. But that may well be a very bad idea for reasons as yet unknown to me.

honeybeetheoneandonly · 10/09/2020 14:08

Put a camera up for a day and night and see if anything emerges?

Armi · 10/09/2020 14:11

Rat.

Get pest control.

Cosyjimjamsforautumn · 10/09/2020 14:11

Wasps make a scratching noise.

justdivein · 10/09/2020 14:18

We had a strange scratchy ticking noise recently from the ceiling in our loft bathroom - we thought it was a leaky pipe at first, but no water was appearing. We looked from outside and could see wasps entering under the soffit. We called out a pest controller and he fumigated the nest for £50 (from outside, so no disruption). The noise stopped after that and he said they wouldn't return to the same nest.

vraimenthan · 10/09/2020 14:19

It's a very loud noise which would indicate to me that it's a mouse or rat but its only a tiny tubing. And I can hear the noise from both sides which are above head height. I can't hear scuttling though, and it only stops for a couple of seconds when I tap it and its during the day which would surely indicate against a rodent as parent they nocturnal?. I think I'm going to have to call my mum and see if I can borrow some money for pest control. My house insurance doesn't cover it I've just checked

I'm just so worried if it's a mouse or rat. I'm so scared of anything like that and I can't afford to get pest control out today. I have sound anxiety so my normal state of hearing is at a normal person's listening as hard as they could. The other night I was talking with my husband downstairs with the tv on and could hear my daughter was swishing water in a cup when she should have been asleep so that's how sensitive it is. But as soon as my anxiety is heightened any noise makes me squirm and its 10x worse. I'm not going to sleep

If it is wasps you should see one or two entering and leaving every few minutes.

(Unless they watch day-time telly)

Ishihtzuknot · 10/09/2020 14:25

Bird, wasps or mice. Can you get someone to take it off and have a look? If not then set up a motion detection camera nearby and see what it records. I had a conservatory that make cracking sounds during the day because of the heat on it, could it be that?

Straven123 · 10/09/2020 14:31

A mousetrap nearby baited with an irresistible Malteser pushed onto the prongs should catch the mouse.

vraimenthan · 10/09/2020 14:55

@straven123 I was thinking a mouse trap but the only way to do it would be to put it on the roof of the conservatory and I wouldn't want to harm any other wildlife

@Straven123

Free malteasers?
What's the address?
I'm on my way!

vraimenthan · 10/09/2020 15:01

@ishihtzuknot could be just crackling as the conservatory is very hot and I have heard much smaller and infrequent versions of the noise previously but have always assumed it was a fly trapped in the corner or something on the roof. The fact that it doesn't really stop if I tap it could indicate that but it's a definite scratching not a pop. I dont have any excess money for cameras or pest control and will probably have to dip into the birthday/christmas fund if it comes to it which is a pain but I really dont want to wait until a mouse has gnawed through if it is

We have plastic guttering which creaks loudly as it expands when the sun hits it, could it be that?

vraimenthan · 10/09/2020 18:47

@straven123 I dont think so, it was definate scratching. I haven't heard anything else so I'm hoping it was a 1 off. I'm going to screep in there tonight to see if i can hear anything else at night Grin

It’s fine, it will just be the man who lives in your garden scratching at the windows.

Straven123 · 10/09/2020 18:52

Squirrel storing nuts?

  1. Poke a stick in the hole.
If a load of angry wasps come out... you've got a wasps nest, if they don't - you haven't.
  1. Stuff a cat in the hole.
If it comes out with a mouse in its mouth... you've got mice, if it doesn't - you haven't.
  1. etc. etc.
vraimenthan · 10/09/2020 18:59

Not sure why that's posted twice but I domt think squirrel. It's a small conservatory and the entrance is maybe the size of a 2 pound coin possibly a smidge bigger
