Egg allergy primary school

Sooooo, had an email saying no eggs as a child in the school has an egg allergy. So no Egg andwiches, hard boiled, no scotch And no savoury eggs. But anything else with egg products in is fine.
The whole school has received this email. What I am struggling with, is that egg is in a LOT of products, so does that mean that I should be policing everything that goes in that has egg in, or do I just go by what the school has told me nor to send in? I don’t want to make a child ill, obviously, but I also don’t want to restrict my own dc diet when not needed!
Eggs are in a lot of products, and I think that restricting an entire primary school of any egg related products is a bit unfair!

Sorry, the school HASnot said that any other products with egg in are fine, but that is what is meant I guess...

Anything else with egg products is fine? Doesnt sound too bad to me just dont send hard boiled eggs etc - they stink in packed lunches anyway

SimonJT · 09/09/2020 22:12

Ask the school for clarification.

My son has a severe milk allergy, including a contact allergy so ‘liquid’ milk is banned so things like milk, milkshake, yoghurt etc as they could be easily spilt by a child. But things like chocolate etc aren’t banned as it would be much harder for my son to physically be in contact with them.

Sirzy · 09/09/2020 22:13

Egg in the sense of the banned list products isn’t an ideal packed lunch item anyway and I’m sure won’t be too hard to avoid.

Rachierach11 · 09/09/2020 22:13

I would clarify with the school that anything with egg just as an ingredient is ok and then that's fine. My son has an allergy to pure and raw egg but can happily eat cake and biscuits that contain egg. His reaction to his allergens isn't very severe but I'm guessing the kid at your DCs school suffers badly if they come in to contact with pure egg

dementedpixie · 09/09/2020 22:13

I would never have given any of those items anyway. Eggs smell

HandfulofDust · 09/09/2020 22:17

Like PP said I'd ask the school for clarification. I would imagine though it will be just pure egg that isn't allowed. Something wth trace amounts should be OK but definitely check.

RedHelenB · 09/09/2020 22:18

@SimonJT Do children not have their school milk then?

Floatyboat · 09/09/2020 22:34

Op im still unclear what school said

Floatyboat · 09/09/2020 22:35

It would seem simpler to manage the child concerned than everybody else surely?!

lanthanum · 09/09/2020 22:36

You'd think that, at least for the moment, it's only the relevant bubble that needs to avoid eggs.

Mrsfrumble · 09/09/2020 22:39

Hmmm, I’d check about mayonnaise if I were you OP.

We got an email today about allergies in DD’s bubble saying no dairy products at all, which seems a bit harsh if they can’t even have butter in their sandwiches. I’ll be emailing the school in the morning to clarify.

myworkingtitle · 09/09/2020 22:43

I thought allergy free schools were no longer considered best practise? Maybe that’s for older kids.

Time2change2 · 09/09/2020 22:44

@Mrsfrumble no dairy products at all? Bloody hell, that’s a major Food group and kids can’t even have hot meal at the moment in school. Worlds gone bloody mad.

HandfulofDust · 09/09/2020 22:54

@Floatyboat It depends on the level of the allergy. If it was extreme the child would have to be isolated over lunch time etc which would be horrible. If it's less extreme and the child would just have to be supervised to ensure they didn't eat anyone else's sandwich then yes much easier.

I’ve got one baby with a soya and milk allergy and a 3 year old who has a milk allergy but has managed part of the milk ladder. I’m just asking the preschool staff to keep an extra close eye on him at lunch time not exclude whole food groups. Unless it’s a severe allergy extra supervision should be the norm. Plus dairy is in everything so it’s a nightmare to avoid

Mrsfrumble · 10/09/2020 09:58

I have emailed the school to ask about the dairy product thing. It’s actually not a problem for me as school are still serving hot lunches (which have included dairy heavy lasagne and pizza this week Confused) which DD will eat happily. If it was DS’s bubble it would be trickier as he’s a fussy bugger and will only eat a very limited packed lunch.

Floatyboat · 12/09/2020 07:37

Have school replied?

GoldfishParade · 12/09/2020 07:40

This is ridiculous. If a child has an allergy it's up to parents to impress kn them how they are NEVER to take food from others, etc etc, not for an entire school to restrict their diets.

IKEA888 · 12/09/2020 07:44

This has happened at our school.but also including egg as an ingredient.
I don't think the school are policing it at all.
School lunches have said all.cake and mayo is egg free
