AIBU to detest kids saying 'like' 4 times per sentence?

or to put it into youth speak:
"Like: when do - like - kids, stop like...saying "like", you know, 4 times per, like, sentence?"

When do they, like, grow out of it?

I used to own a shop, a mid-teen came in with such a long fringe, that he held his head sideways, occassionally sweeping it up and allowing it to drop back again. "I was wondering if - like - you had any - like - jobs?"
I said pardon, he repeated it word for word, so it's not as if the 'likes' were to to cover up pauses whilst he worked out what words he needed. He genuinely thought that was how a sentence was constructed.

They do eventually grow out of it

Laaalaaaa · 09/09/2020 16:35

Plenty of like adults still like do it pretty regularly like.

BashfulClam · 09/09/2020 16:37

I saw a child interviewed for local news who did that ‘I’m glad that like they are building like new houses. They will be like clean and like modern and like nice and like everything!’

Nquartz · 09/09/2020 16:37

It's not just teens unfortunately. I also hate it!

CloudSingsAloud · 09/09/2020 16:40

Grin I remember my mum complaining about this 30 years ago!

happymummy12345 · 09/09/2020 16:42

I'm 27 and my husband is 34, I'll be honest and say we do that ourselves. Even more so since we started watching love island.

jmh740 · 09/09/2020 16:43

My dd13 does it, it drives me barmy

Plussizejumpsuit · 09/09/2020 16:43

There's probably lots of ways you speak or things you say which seem out of date snd annoying to younger people. But as long as the meaning isn't obscured it isn't a big issue.

Porcupineinwaiting · 09/09/2020 16:43

YANBU. May youngest drives me crazy. He's 12 and no sign of growing out of it yet.

Rosebel · 09/09/2020 16:46

My 14 year old does it all the time too. But it's not as annoying as basically. Every single sentence starts with basically, it drives me nuts.

dollypartonscoat · 09/09/2020 16:57

So, they like grow out of it, like, eventually brud

LakieLady · 09/09/2020 17:01

@Rosebel, I think "obviously" might be the new "basically". I keep hearing kids saying "obviously" about things that aren't obvious in any sense of the word.

"Literally" has clearly had its day. Obviously.

GoldenNCurly · 09/09/2020 17:02

I used to say like a lot when I was a teenager and didn't realise until it was pointed out

MsTSwift · 09/09/2020 17:03

Please say they grow out of it (14 and 12 year old “like” central here)

DisneyMillie · 09/09/2020 17:05

My dd is 10 and does this - drives me crazy!

FedUpofLockdown123 · 09/09/2020 17:06

My 8 year old hasn't reached this stage yet but does use "literally" when it's not literal and "actual"

EveryDayIsADuvetDay · 09/09/2020 17:07

you forgot to mention "likes" interspersed with "innits"

UserFriendly14 · 09/09/2020 17:36

I have a colleague who says “obviously” ALL day long. In customer service. Yeah that doesn’t go down well when you’re trying to politely tell someone they’re in the wrong.

BigBlondeBimbo · 09/09/2020 17:42

I don't mind it tbh. I don't mind any of the wee phrases dcs pick up, probably from other kids, older kids or tv.

But not U to not like it. My sil used to get Angry when her dd, dniece, used to sound "too American". She did grow out of it. Think it's just them trying out new words and phrases.

"I know, right?"
"Wait...what?"
"That was SICK"

My 5 yo's current favourites^^.

sammylady37 · 09/09/2020 17:43

Oh this drives me mad. Worse is when they say “and I was like no way and he was like we have to and I was like forget it...”. Makes me want to grab them by the throat and scream at them!

BigBlondeBimbo · 09/09/2020 17:43

It isn't new though btw. My teachers used to criticise us for this in primary age / prep school and I am now mid thirties!

VickyEadieofThigh · 09/09/2020 18:20

I think "literally" (always used incorrectly) is the new "like".

Andylion · 09/09/2020 18:27

Also irritating, people who begin sentences with "I mean".
I mean, what is the function of those words in a sentence?

Mutunus · 09/09/2020 18:33
