Should DD go to school today?

DD is 13. It's her first day back in school for 6 months today.
She's woken up with a steaming cold - snot, watery eyes, sneezing plus an occasional cough. I know it's a only a cold and not Covid - nowhere in the Covid symptoms do you get a runny nose and sneezing which is her main symptom.
But it's going to make it awkward for her wearing a mask, not touching her face etc and I know everyone is going to be on ultra high alert today.
WIBU to send her in to school anyway?

Apparently in scotland there were 127 cases found in children but 39,000 child tests came back negative. That's a lot of colds circulating!

WeAllHaveWings · 09/09/2020 09:18

You need to ask your school for guidance/clarity, no point in sending in if school will send back again. ds has had a cold for the last 10 days and we have treated as we would any normal cold, he has snotty/blocked nose, occasional phlegmy cough, slightly sore throat, no temperature and is in school (in Scotland).

This is the link to guidance that has been given by the Scottish Government and school, if it is cold symptoms with no covid symptoms treat as a normal cold.

WeAllHaveWings - thanks - I couldn't find any similar guidance for English schools.

I don't think kids should go to school with a bad cough anyway tbh. It'll send it round the whole place

It amazes me the number of people who say the guidance is clear then miss out the word 'continuous' before cough.

We are entering cold and flu season, this means that, potentially, many people with a cold will test positive for Covid, it doesn't necessarily mean cold symptoms are Covid symptoms. We honestly can't keep telling everyone who coughs or sneezes to get a test.

Last week my 3 year old had a bit of a cold with a snotty nose and now that hers has cleared up her two brothers have caught the cold and the oldest has a slight cough with it. I’ve sent them to school. They don’t feel ill in themselves and surely we can’t be keeping kids off every time they get a sniffle?

The OP mentioned an occassional, phlegm-clearing cough.

Where have you got 'bad cough' from?

BigBadVoodooHat · 09/09/2020 10:23

Urgh, typo in 'occasional' ~ silly me Blush

millymollymoomoo · 09/09/2020 11:06

It’s no wonder that testing capacities are stretched when people recommend tests for a blatant cold

Di11y · 09/09/2020 11:07

I heard on a different thread that schools have spare tests in stock for parents who can't get one elsewhere. Contact the school and see if they can help.

10 tests per school aren’t going to go far, especially if everyone with a cold wants one!
Howslifenow · 09/09/2020 11:19

Keep her home and see how she feels.

I've been trying to get ds and I a test since Monday with no joy. The GP said he needs a test even though his only symptom (on the list) at the time was a temperature. He also had a runny nose, sore throat and abdominal pain. He's now coughing, sneezing, snotty and unwell. He has given it to me and I'm now on steroids for my asthma. He's not been anywhere except school and there's a child in his class with "a cold" so thanks very much that parent for spreading it round. That's our family of 4 self isolating for 2 weeks now as I cant get us a test. Dd was only in school for one day before having to isolate.
