AIBU to want a referral? Doctor won't do it

Hi all
I have a growth on my face that started a couple of months ago. It is getting noticeable and the doctor said it was benign and froze it a few weeks ago. They didn't use the liquid nitrogen gun as they had run out of nitrogen, so used one of those aerosol guns which is about 100 less cold than liquid nitrogen. It didn't freeze cold enough, the growth was untouched and it just made my skin red.
I have asked to be referred to somewhere where they have liquid nitrogen or to see a dermatologist as I am worried that as the growth is growing quickly, it could be cancerous.
The doctor won't refer me and instead wants me to go for minor surgery where it will scraped off. This will leave a scar.
I am going to ask for a second opinion. The surgery should allow that, shouldn't it?
I guess iIf I have to, I will pay to go private, but I just think the doctor should consider another freeze option before cutting something out of my face.

You can ask to see another GP at the same practice.

YANBU. Everyone is entitled to a second opinion.

SomeHalfHumanCreatureThing · 08/09/2020 21:29

So your GP said it was benign? I assume you've not had a biopsy or tests at all?

Definitely not unreasonable to want a second opinion and referral.

I would ask for a referral or like above pay private. I have just paid £175 to see a gastroenterologist privately as couldn’t be seen by nhs this year.

You absolutely have a right to ask for second opinion. Bad care needs to be challenged and if it's proven it was a bad care, make sure to put a complaint in.

I am quite surprised tbh because I've been sent for check up very quickly with new mole. I have crapload but this one felt different.

If you are worried it might be cancerous, YANBU to ask for a dermatology referral. But YABU to want it frozen off - they'd have no way of examining it under a microscope in that case, so couldn't tell if it was cancer or not, or what the best treatment would be.

SomeHalfHumanCreatureThing · 08/09/2020 21:32

BTW, this is from a place of having sought another opinion at the same practice after one GP made a near fatal mistake with a referral for my daughter. Other GP referred us to hospital straight away
Many shite GPs out there, sadly. This one got moved somewhere else thankfully, the rest at my local surgery are outstanding and wonderful

CoffeeRunner · 08/09/2020 21:36

Absolutely get a second opinion. A quickly growing growth needs some investigation or removal & then histology.

ShawshanksRedemption · 08/09/2020 22:00

I've had a growth frozen off OP, it did leave a scar in that the area has lost pigmentation and is now very white (and I'm quite pale anyway!).

I would ask the GP why minor surgery - it may be that's the quickest way to find out if it's cancerous if there is an issue in getting hold of liquid nitrogen.

Thanks for your comments, all.
I am happy for the doctor to refer me to a dermatologist so it can be removed properly and for histology to be carried out.
I have had seborrheic keratosis lesions frozen off before. They were quick growing as I recall, but brown and crusty. This one is a regular, round shape, pretty flat, skin-coloured and doesn't hurt when I touch it.
I imagine it is benign, but the fact it has grown so quickly is a bit concerning.
Maybe I am over reacting as it is about 4mm in length.
