To ask your preferred working hours

narcdad45 · 08/09/2020 18:54

Posting for traffic and also curious to hear from others what your preferred working hours would be if the choice was.

A: Monday to Wednesday 10am - 5pm
B: Monday to Thursday 8-4 Term time

Salary would be £1k extra for B and I'd still be entitled to annual leave

2 kids 5 & 8 and absolutely no family support and 40 minute commute each way.
Sorry don't know how to do voting.

B would be my choice.

flirtygirl · 09/09/2020 03:23

A as I hate getting up early and would always choose less days.

BugCatcher879 · 09/09/2020 04:00

Guineapigbridge · 09/09/2020 04:13

B and ask for WFH on one of the days if you can.

Charleyhorses · 09/09/2020 04:45

Given the ages i would do B. There's an awkward spot at around 10 when kids don't want their school hols to be full of clubs but are too young to stat at home on their own.

echt · 09/09/2020 06:05

9.00 - 3.30. with an hour for lunch and a morning break.

Which is what is so fondly imagined by so many on MN to be the teachers' cushti deal.Hmm

KatherineJaneway · 09/09/2020 06:07

B as I am an early bird anyway.

The extra day a week for 39 school weeks means you're being paid an additional £25 for that day, yet have to pay for another 40 minutes petrol/car wear and tear/parking etc. Plus you're always having to pay for morning and afternoon wraparound care for 4 days x 2 x 39=312 wrap around sessions versus wraparound for 1 session x 3 days x 47=141 Also though you'd get the school holidays off with B, you'd only really need to be having care for a max of 3 days and can spread your annual leave across the year, so isn't imo (and I work 3 days a week) that difficult to manage. I'd go for A personally.
narcdad45 · 09/09/2020 06:56

@SoloMummy the wrap around care for 4 days works out £3 per week more, so not a huge difference with the addition of petrol costs it's still leaves me slightly better off annually with the pay increase of £1k

Summer holiday clubs around here work out more expensive for daily rates rather than week block bookings, so they are £34 per child per day with a sibling discount of 5% for 2nd child, I end up paying so much more during the holidays if my annual leave can't stretch.

I have the option of changing my work pattern after 12 months if it is not working so I'm go to bite the bullet and try it out.

I won't get lunch, I'll get a 20 minute break, if I want a lunch it will be unpaid.

B. No-brainer. I love term time. I will never go back to non term-time contracts!

echt · 09/09/2020 07:27

What's your point, *narcdad45?

Rhubardandcustard · 09/09/2020 07:28

B

CharitySchmarity · 09/09/2020 07:36

If I still had school age kids I'd almost certainly go for B.

narcdad45 · 09/09/2020 07:36

@echt the point is that I'll not have lunch 😀

I have B.

I work 8.30-4.00, Mon-Weds term time only.

Salary isn't great but work/home balance more than makes up for that!

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 09/09/2020 07:38

B.

But work Tue-Fri so you don't have to use your leave to cover some of the bank holidays.
