To ask you the help me work out what size curtains I need?!

Please can somebody help, I don't understand what size curtains to get, and always get the wrong size! I can measure the window, obvs, but then I know the curtains need to be bigger than the measurement, but by how much?

Window is 94cm, but how wide should the curtains be? Options seem to be 117cm, 168cm, 228cm and 284cm. I'd like them to be full ish, but not too full looking! Have googled, but it's not really helping me... Please help!

(I can sort out the length!)

56" x 90"

Generally you go for each individual curtain panel being as wide as the window for two curtains. (So two curtains the size of the window width each).

Spanglybangles · 08/09/2020 11:39

If the window is 94cm wide, I’d opt for the 117cm as that’s the width of each curtain and the general rule is for each curtain to be around the width of the window. This allows for a good few folds in each curtain and for them to close nicely without being really stretched across the pole.

For context my window is 169cm wide and my curtains are 168cm.

One and a half times the width of the window will give you a light gather so that would be the 168cm size. Twice the width of the window will give you a full deep gather, so that will be the 228cm size.
The weigh of the fabric (how thick and heavy it is) will affect how it gathers, so you might have a double width of light fabric to give a full gather, but only need one and a half widths of a bulkier fabric.

Read the packaging carefully for sizing information, as some ready made curtains give the measurements for one curtain, while others give the measurements for the pair together.

Depends what type curtains. Eyelet you can get away with less. Pencil pleat. My mum was told each curtain should be 3 times window width. I went for double. But for eyelet curtains I went for less but slightly more than recommended on Dunelm website who say each curtain should be window width X 1.5 / 2.

AdaColeman · 08/09/2020 12:01

Oh right! Then if 117cm is the width of one curtain, I agree that will be fine for your window, and give you a nice amount of gather.
Hope I’ve not confused you further @TokyoSushi, I make my own curtains, so tend to think in terms of the whole window size!

Spanglybangles · 08/09/2020 12:04

Thanks @TokyoSushi

I agree with others that you may want to go with a wider curtain if it’s pencil pleat.

TokyoSushi · 08/09/2020 12:14

They're Dunelm eyelet curtains so I think I'm going to give the 117cm a whirl!

Wow @AdaColeman I would have no clue where to begin making them, as you can see, I can't even measure for them!

Good choice Tokyo. My mum has conditioned me into needing really full curtains if they're pencil pleat. And I must say the pencil pleat ones I made over the summer are rather bushy and tricky to get to sit neatly. Why the hell did I use so much fabric when they are likely to be drawn maybe 3/4 times a year if that!! The eyelets on the other hand sit beautifully. I'm an eyelet convert! I can see why they are getting popular.
