Buying a new buggy for older toddler

BigBlondeBimbo · 08/09/2020 10:08

Slightly cheekily posting for traffic!

I am not being U, I don't think, as we really do need a new buggy for our large toddler! The old one was a beautiful big pushchair, which we got for £50 secondhand. Even DH who is extremely careful with money has agreed we need a new one as the old one is literally falling to bits. The chassis has started to come apart and it is just very well worn. This is the second DC in our family alone who has used it and we bought it secondhand in the first place.

Any who, can anyone please recommend a good buggy for a large toddler? It would need to be nice and comfy for him, lightweight and good to push around town.

I know he may not be in it all that much longer, but we can always sell on when he is out of it. He is two years old and tall, but not massive.

If you go places that are a bit muddy/bumpy/grassy/hilly I wouldn’t recommend a bugaboo bee. I have one (& love it!) but I feel it’s better suited to pavements

Ok thank you. That's really useful. We do a bit of everything really, but mainly on pavement. It would be nice to have the option to use it on rougher terrain too though, so think that rules out the bugaboo bee.

RogueV yes that always makes me laugh. I am curious to what the parents who get rid of the buggy and buy a balance bike when their kid is 2 do when they are in a busy shopping centre/theme park/busy tourist place.

JanewaysBun · 08/09/2020 11:47

I have a zest and whilst I do like it

  1. The wheels are smaller than the pop so less able to cover rough ground.
  2. If you put bags on the handles and he child gets out it falls over backwards EVERY fucking time... So annoying.

I swapped it for a nano but I'm not really keen tbh. The baby jogger would be my recommendation

I can remember sitting in my sister's pram aged 3 occaisionally and can confirm that my legs do still manage to work!

Hi OP I know you have had lots of recommendations but just thought I would mention Joie Brisk XL stroller . It is lightweight, sturdy and a dream to push with a decent sized shopping basket. Got it from Argos three weeks ago for £100 for my granddaughter. Just to add my three children were in buggies until they were3.5 to 4 and they are all healthy, sporty adults !! Cannot understand why people are so judgemental...anything that makes your life easier has got to be the way forward!

BigBlondeBimbo · 08/09/2020 11:54

Thanks again everyone who made suggestions. I've ordered a Silver Cross Pop. It seems the right sort of price to get value out of it for the amount we are likely to use it and also sturdy enough for it not to fall to bits with quite a lot of use.

Thanks all Flowers.

@NoIDontWatchLoveIsland

"He is not showing any signs of wanting out of his pushchair yet."

Hmmm but do actually make sure hes getting plenty of exercise? Children shouldnt be sitting in push chairs for hours each day when they can walk

My friends son was like this, bit lazy and didnt want to walk, and now at 4 she has got doctors saying he is overweight. It's much easier to get them in good habits now than try and get them walking at 4.

You win the judgey Internet award today. It's none of your business whether he DC gets enough exercise. If you don't have a recommendation then move along. MN sometimes Angry

Me neither. My youngest was in the buggy occasionally for the school run until he started school himself. I only got judgy comments from people who lived much closer or drove to school. Nothing from anyone who walked their preschooler several miles a day on a deadline, rain or shine.

This is why MN makes me so angry at times. My SIL used to sometimes have to carry her 5 YO daughter to school, not because she was lazy or overweight or had development problems it was just because she couldn't walk at the break neck speed my SIL had to because she left the house too late. There's loads of reasons why people want to use a pushchair or buggy until DC are 3, 4 or even 5 and it's no one else's business.
aToadOnTheWhole · 08/09/2020 12:33

@FoxtrotSkarloey

We've just got a Silver Cross Pop and I'm quite happy with it. Two main reasons were 25kg max weight limit and decent ability for rougher ground. The downside is it's a bit bulkier than I would have liked for a pushchair but it was the best I could find.
This. We had one from 16m and DS is nearly 4 and can still fit. We were still using it regularly until April, and then we stopped going anywhere further than he bottom of the road.
BigBlondeBimbo · 08/09/2020 12:36

Thanks @aToadOnTheWhole. I've ordered one of these! Excited!

Thanks @FoxtrotSkarloey.

We have gone with this one:

Looks quite similar to yours I think. I like that it has a long back, as dc2 is tall.

I'm loving some of these comments Grin
DS (age 2 - but 3 in December) can easily walk a few miles, we do lots of walking as a family and he's so active with a ridiculous amount of energy!

Baby number 2 is due in January and we've just bought a double buggy, I can think of so many situations where it will be useful! Nursery run, shopping, days out, naps, holidays etc I've no desire to run my child into the ground just so I can be smug and superior. I might even take it to Florida when they'll be 5 and 2 in a couple of years, average of 13 miles a day in tropical heat and I'd happily get in one!

Caspianberg · 08/09/2020 14:12

@MaryShelley1818 - sounds good. I’m sure your 2-3 year old old could walk many places in January, but when it’s pissing with rain and -3 outside, having the option to just strap them in and get somewhere with newborn rather than drag them along wailing will sure save your sanity. If your lucky both will nap sometimes at the same time.

Personally I’m a fully fledged adult, if they made prams big enough and I had a willing volunteer, the idea of an outdoor afternoon snooze whilst being pushed around in fresh air sounds lush.

Soubriquet · 08/09/2020 14:31

I hope you get on well with it but I personally found strollers hard to push on flat ground let alone rough terrain

Fingers crossed it's alright 🤞! Will try it out indoors and will send back if it doesn't seem right. I find strollers hard to push and a but flimsy normally, but this one gets reviews saying it's sturdy and smooth, so hopefully that's true!

Have a look on gum tree or Facebook market place and get something cheap and local.

DisappointingAvocado · 08/09/2020 15:45

Double check the bugaboo bee as our big toddler broke ours when he got close to the weight limit (15kg) before 2. It had been very cheap second hand so maybe they're more sturdy now or with a higher weight limit. Was a shame as it was such a good buggy but think it's for more average sized kids. We ended up getting an Oyster zero new which has been absolutely perfect. 20kg weight limit, super sturdy, easy fold, great to push, good size comfy seat. Think we paid about 220 for it and that included rain cover etc.

KeyWorker · 08/09/2020 15:46

The armadillo was great but became difficult to push when (tall and heavy) dd was 2 years 4 months. I then got a out n about Nipper and got a solid 12 months out of it. We stopped using it so much at three and a half but still used it occasionally till just aged 4. We got it new and sold it for a good price but a good. Condtion one would do you well too.

DisappointingAvocado · 08/09/2020 15:47

Just seen you've bought one. Actually we tried that one too and it was a close second so good choice.

BigBlondeBimbo · 08/09/2020 16:39

Thanks all.

I've just spotted another one, called a Hauck Runner 3..? It's cheaper than the Silver Cross one and it looks a bit less stroller-y... @Soubriquet reminded me I don't really like strollers Blush.

I've cancelled the SC one. They were extremely helpful.

Now deliberating between the Hauck and the Nipper 360... Nipper 360 is pricier but think we would get more use out of it IF we get to go on our usual outdoorsy holidays. If not, then we wouldn't really get value out of it, so it's a bit tricky.

The Zeta Voom is brilliant.

BigBlondeBimbo · 08/09/2020 16:50

I've ordered the Hauck one. They had it in stock in one place, in the colour I wanted, so think it was fate! It is cheaper than the Silver Cross one and I can also use it as a jogging buggy, so I think it will be good. Will report back!

Thanks again everyone Flowers.
