DM I know I am BU - racism

The diversity dance and the complaints.

I read the DM comments section and just feel throughly depressed.

Racism is not a political thing.

Are we really that racist as a nation?

Please heal me and make me delete the DM app.

That was amazing, thank you for posting OP! I hadn't seen it at all. Very powerful, very moving.

I think there are some big conversations happening at the moment, and it's really important not to dismiss people as bigoted racists when they raise questions. I mean, yes there are bigots and racists. But we need to listen to the worries of underprivileged white groups as well, if we want to build a more equable future.

I've just watched it on You Tube and it has about two thirds liking it and one third not, about the same roughly as voting on this thread.

That means about 3 in 10 people disagree with the sentiment. That is still too many and it's about time that some serious re-education was applied.

I don't know what form that could take but maybe benefits could be tied to a 'racism' tax and for those in work, maybe an extra tax could be applied for all those who don't sign maybe a pledge-given to everyone in the country-that they metaphorically at least take the knee.

That might be unworkable but something big, something serious, has to be done to re-educate the ignorant amongst us.

Every 'big' job that falls available should be given to a PoC-why, for example is the new presenter for Woman's Hour white? Every university place should first be offered to a PoC, as should all social housing. Extreme? maybe but extreme measures are needed.

Yes, I find racism is still around.

I find a lot of people are racist as well as prejudice.

Its unfortunate but a lot of people are small minded and backwards.
Here's a bit of my experience on it....

I've been told I am a traitor to my own kind for marrying a man of a different ethnicity to me. I deem that as extremely racist and rather rude and actuallyquite pathetic
... Who cares what colour we are, we are happy, our children are happy. I love it that we are interracial and we have a strong marriage. There are people who actually think you should marry your own colour of skin. Marry who makes you happy, doesnt matter what country they're from is what I say.

I also have friends of different nationalities, does that mean I am a traitor then also.
I've also been called various names also because I am a muslim and i am white.
Not necessarily racist names, but ridiculous prejudice accusations of things like, am i a member of the taliban, was i forced to wear that thing and you look stupid trying to dress like a pakistani. News flash. Not all Pakistanis are muslims and not all muslims are Pakistani.
You don't have to be a certain race to love God. Anyone can be a Muslim.
I've been taunted at and laughed at, asked what the eff am I wearing on my head. I get started at everyday. It's a hijab. Not a traffic cone. Criticized because I don't drink alcohol and dont eat pork. I'm not I'm to die because I don't eat bloody pork.

I find it sad that people are like this.
I've seen people being racist towards people, and it really saddens me. There is no need. We are all one.

It’s so fucking depressing. And I agree don’t go near the fail but then again, the hatred of those types of people seems to be seeping into everything and everywhere. There seems to be no secrecy about people’s bigoted views and behaviour. It’s good in a way- these cunts are out in the open where we can see them- but my god it bums me out when I realise just how many racist bigoted arseholes there are.

Pobblebonk · 08/09/2020 12:33

Never read DM comments - or, if you must, go to the ones listed as least popular, because you get occasional outbreaks of sanity there. If I thought DM commentators were in any way representative of the population as a whole I would definitely be emigrating.

Toilenstripes · 08/09/2020 12:35

I used to read it for the gossip value but it’s just not worth feeling so ick and sad about the vile comments.

Pobblebonk · 08/09/2020 12:39

The trouble with the Mail's comments is that they just don't bother to moderate them at all, and indeed it would probably be physically impossible unless they impose a limit on posting. So all the bigots derive encouragement from each other and build up a perception that unbelievably hateful stuff is absolutely fine and totally acceptable because the Mail doesn't delete it.

I remember once seeing one of their clickbait articles which was blatantly designed to vilify and whip up ill feeling against someone they disapproved of. One of the delightful commenters saw fit to publish this person's address, closely followed by a whole group egging each other on to go round there and attack this person and make his life hell. I was so worried that I went to a lot of trouble to contact the Mail to point out that if this person or his family were injured they would be directly responsible, and eventually they took the relevant posts down - but they'd been up undisturbed for quite a long time before I saw them, and they did nothing about withdrawing or moderating the article.

YouJustDoYou · 08/09/2020 12:42

You should've read the article a woman wrote about the talks she gives in schools detailing sexual assault on women nd how young boys are now heckling her. The comments, as expected, were horrifically misogynistic- DM commentators seem to be mostly very angry, perpetually hateful men. I wouldn't take anything any of those grokkles say to heart.

ktp100 · 08/09/2020 12:57

My daily anger-due-to-spam-fritters levels have dropped massively since deleting the DM app. I loved the side-bar-of-shame (embarrassing) but I'd get dragged into reading things I just knew would make me rage so I let it go.

I don't even miss knowing what reality stars I've never heard of are wearing on the beach!!

SerendipityJane · 08/09/2020 13:21

Oh they jolly well do - whenever it's a topic where the majority of the public aren't fascist apologists. It's quite telling.
