Patio heater/fire pit etc

We've really loved being outdoors this year thanks to the lovely weather. Its also had the benefit of being able to gently socialise whilst sticking to the rules which is a big tick for me.

Now the weather is starting to cool down and the nights are getting darker earlier I am really tempted to buy a firepit so we can sit out and keep warm and toast stuff and all that romantic stuff.

Am I better getting a patio heater instead or something else I haven't considered yet.. Or are they a real fad item? Even better if someone can recommend one for me please!

I would get the fire pit. Thwrebos something to be said for sitting out in front of a fire and talking to your partner, gopssiping with your friends and roasting marshmallows with your kids. I absolutely cannot wait until November/December when we can dk that. Good times and good memories

mamma2013 · 07/09/2020 15:37

That's the exact image I have. bonfire night eating jacket potatoes and soup, Xmas and New year out there with hot chocolates etc.

Please don't get a patio heater - they are appallingly bad for the environment, recently been banned in France.

Fyzz · 07/09/2020 15:46

I bought one early in lockdown hoping to be able to see adult DC outdoors if weather poor.
It pours out smoke and you'd have to be glued to it to keep warm. Only lit it once.

love our fire pit. its really fantastic. definitely recommend it! I would get well seasoned wood though or you end up basically sat in a cloud of smoke.

i would also get some good blankets for you back, it heats the front of you beautifully.

LonelyFromCorona · 07/09/2020 15:49

You'll be popular with the neighbours, all the smoke and stink...

One of my fa b oriented traditions. Sitting outside on NYE drinking hot chocolate with just a dash of Kahala while watching fireworks over the ocean
Fyzz · 07/09/2020 15:51

It's a chiminea. We have well seasoned wood it's several years old.

Nothing makes me want to go inside more than a smelly smoky fire pit. I'd rather wrap up in a thick throw. I hate having to go home stinking of acrid smoke, it gets in my hair and on my clothes.

Can you tell I'm not a fan Grin

Wilma55 · 07/09/2020 15:55

Buy fire logs (eg Tigertim) which are smokeless and last about 2 hours

VeryQuaintIrene · 07/09/2020 16:04

Firepits are wonderful! Can't want to get ours out again (still way too hot where I live.)

Oneborneverydecade · 07/09/2020 16:06

Can anyone recommend a firepit? I've promised my DH one for xmas

TheHappyHerbivore · 07/09/2020 16:16

I love a fire pit. There’s something really wonderful about keeping warm by a fire, and the beautiful woods sweet scent of the smoke. I have my eye on a lovely laser cut one I want for Christmas.

lakesidefall · 07/09/2020 17:27

We have a fire pit, we use the same smokeless logs outdoors as we use indoors. It is pretty and great for marshmallows. Not sure it adds much heat.

EddieVeddersfoxymop · 07/09/2020 17:42

Oh god, not a fire pit. Think of your poor neighbours. We are plagued with my neighbours one, we can't open windows, venture outside or even have the vents open on the windows for the smoke. I'm asthmatic and wood smoke is my no 1 migraine trigger. My heart sinks every time they are out in the garden in case they light it up.

Bickles · 07/09/2020 17:50

We have just bought this one, I appreciate it’s not great for the environment but we don’t want to have to light a fire pit every time my mum pops round for a cup of tea.

Patio heaters are very ineffective, especially if it is any way windy. My Dsis has a fire pit, that works great, but I'd not get one where we live (Dsis live in the countryside)

Yunis · 07/09/2020 17:57

Firepit! I use mine several times a week.

SteveArnottsbeadyeyes · 07/09/2020 18:03

We’ve got this - no smoke to annoy the neighbours and just generally fun.

WonderWebbs · 07/09/2020 18:09

We have have a fire pit and to be honest it wasn't the best. DH bought a chiminea in lockdown and it is great and minimal smoke, although it did spit when we first used it. Thankfully we have a reasonable sized garden so there is distance from neighbours.

WonderWebbs · 07/09/2020 18:15

@SteveArnottsbeadyeyes We have friends who have something similar and I agree that it great. My DH went with a chiminea as I think it just gave him something to do whilst having a beer and extending our time in the garden.

SteveArnottsbeadyeyes · 07/09/2020 18:16

@WonderWebbs it was a bit of a treat - but I really enjoy it.

MillieEpple · 07/09/2020 18:21

I hate smoke - bad asthma! So i dread fire pit nights. But i was thinking electric blankets or those microwaveable bean filled things

thegreenlight · 07/09/2020 18:33

Fire pits are fine in the autumn and winter when your neighbours are likely to have their doors and windows shut - I bloody hate them in the summer, especially when people have them near to the house so no escaping the smoke!
