Any cheese and biscuit dessert in a restaurant is always really expensive so I never bother.
I agree it's more a lunchtime thing or a snack in the evening in front of the tv.

contrmary · 07/09/2020 13:14

YABU. It can be both. Like with soup, it can be a lunch on its own or a starter with a meal.

Ohtherewearethen · 07/09/2020 13:15

I used to work in a place where a chap would come in quite frequently and instead of biscuits with his cheese he'd ask for half a baguette. So he'd eat his dinner then have a cheese sandwich afterwards! Never understood that one. Give me something sweet any day.

Ohtherewearethen · 07/09/2020 13:16

@contrmary - but you wouldn't have soup as a pudding. That's what OP is talking about - having something savoury as a dessert.

Deux · 07/09/2020 13:17

Cheese and crackers then followed by pudding. But I can’t imagine having a cheese course after a Sunday roast for some reason.

Zilla1 · 07/09/2020 13:17

A legitimate course of a multi-course meal with a geographical dispute concerning whether cheese should be before (French) or after (British) pudding. As Sunday roast is more of a substantial meal then may be appropriate

lidoshuffle · 07/09/2020 13:19

Loads of deserts I can't stand: sticky toffee pudding, anything with jelly, salted caramel, coconut, ginger to name just some. Cheese and biscuits are often the only option! Smile

Disappointedkoala · 07/09/2020 13:22

It's excellent as both. Also very good as a late night snack.

RedPanda17 · 07/09/2020 13:24

I don't like dessert so cheese and biscuits is the best. Always have it when I'm out for Christmas dinner

Oysterbabe · 07/09/2020 13:25

Cheese and biscuits is the best possible dessert.
YABU.

Kaktus · 07/09/2020 13:26

I always choose cheese and biscuits over a sweet pudding.

seayork2020 · 07/09/2020 13:28

We sometimes have cheese and crackers before a meal or for lunch (or in desperation breakfast)

But no i don't get the love for it as a dessert, or even fruit platters

Lansonmaid · 07/09/2020 13:31

Cheese and biscuits over a sweet dessert most of the time for me, only choose a dessert if the cheese is really boring.

workhomesleeprepeat · 07/09/2020 13:33

I don’t really like most sweet things, barely ever order dessert. Pisses me off that cheese course is often more expensive then whatever sugary shite is on the dessert menu! YABU op, people have different tastes in things

stovetopespresso · 07/09/2020 13:38

it should be illegal

stovetopespresso · 07/09/2020 13:38

After a roast wrongwrongwrong

Nottobesoldseparately · 07/09/2020 13:41

It's so much more than a lunch thing!!

It's for after you've had dessert, whilst you are chatting with your liquors because you've had to much wine!!

stovetopespresso · 07/09/2020 13:43

@Nottobesoldseparately I guess I could make an exception for thatGrin

OwlBasket · 07/09/2020 13:46

Cheese and fruit is great for afters, cheese and crackers less so.

OwlBasket · 07/09/2020 13:46

But I do agree that’s it’s a legitimate desert

DoubleDolphin · 07/09/2020 13:47

In a traditional 7 course meal, each dish is on the small side, so as there is room for cheese and biscuits.

So think it goes...
Fruit cocktail
Soup
Fish
Main
Dessert
Cheese and biscuits
Coffee

NiceLegsShameAboutTheFace · 07/09/2020 13:47

Cheese and biscuits is the very finest pudding. I choose my dinner dates based on their feelings towards cheese. I don't want the buggers eating their Death By Chocolate and then sticking their grubby mitts into my Stilton.

Men who don't like cheese rock Grin

Egghead68 · 07/09/2020 13:48

If I was looking forward to pudding and someone gave me cheese I would not be impressed.

Egghead68 · 07/09/2020 13:48

Before/after pudding is fine. NOT instead of.

Nottobesoldseparately · 07/09/2020 13:50

It's the way we've always done it growing up.

Mum and dad even allowed us a small taste of the liquors as children. The grandchildren know this way tooShock and are most put out when there is no cheese course Grin
