Bread not fitting Sandwich Toaster - light-hearted

Professionallytorn · 06/09/2020 19:52

I look a good toastie, & trying out filling combinations, but I get so cross that it seems that sw toaster manufacturers seem to ignore the sizes of ready sliced bread. I can never find a loaf that is square enough so that contents don't leak everywhere ! AIBU to return a sandwich maker under trading standards...not being fit for purpose ?!? 🤪 How does everyone else manage? Should i just dust off the Diablo and have tiny toasted sandwiches instead? What are your best fillings ? 🤣🙄

I use a George foreman to make them! So much easier 😀

Palavah · 06/09/2020 19:54

Yabu - the toasty edge bits are great.

If the filling is leaking out then you miay be overfilling? You need to let it seal in the right place

Toddlerteaplease · 06/09/2020 19:56

I tried doing crumpets in my George foreman this morning. Not sure if I didn't give them long enough, but it wasn't a success!

KarlKennedysDurianFruit · 06/09/2020 19:57

Another vote for the George foreman, if you overfill the sandwich a bit just put something heavy ish on top of the George, much nicer than those triangular toasties

MyMomisaplumber · 06/09/2020 20:04

Definitely George Forman. My girls also make toast in ours- butter bread and put it in. It’s the only way they eat toast🙄

Jouleigh · 06/09/2020 20:05

Get a panini press, does great toasties as well as panini's.

It balances on top of the bread so doesn't squish it down as much. You can then fill it with what you like. Cheese will go over sometimes but I like that!

It's better than the Forman grill as it's flat and really easy to clean as no ridges. Just a wipe and it's done.

I actually have two at the moment, one has different plates for waffles, deep filled toasties and panini's. It's not great as the lid is mean to lock.

The other is a proper one and I now really fancy Brie and roasted veg on ciabatta!

They had 2 different deep fill ones in b and m. We got one this week. I'm delighted. No weird inch-wide cardboard bit. Just a nice toastie.

Herdwick · 06/09/2020 20:09

I use the small orange Warburton sliced loaves for this. I think it's literally made for toasted sandwich makers.

BarbaraofSeville · 06/09/2020 20:11

This is madness. As well as sandwich makers not matching bread, normal toasters don't fit bread either.

Equally ridiculous is lasagne sheets not fitting lasagne dishes without having to cut the lasagne. It's a basic design requirement, how hard can it be?

Have you tried turning the slice of bread on its side. Often it will fit that way but not crust upwards.

I have a dolmio lasagne dish that I got from the supermarket free if I bought a jar of dolmio years ago and it fits lasagne sheets perfectly. You have a dish problem not a lasagne sheet problem.

Professionallytorn · 06/09/2020 20:40

I have a 3 in 1 sandwich maker, deep fill, and yes for less sloppy fillings, the panini plates work well, but if wanted to use something with a sauce, or baked beans in a breakfast toastie, the bread isn't wide enough to seal the edges.... My main gripe. Another query, do you butter the outside of your bread? Not for non-stick purposes, but the flavour....😋

Or use a Foreman type of thing with a weight on top.

Surely lasagne sheets are standard size, it's the dishes that are variable?

Kashtan · 06/09/2020 20:45

Agree OP, why it is so hard to have sandwich toasters that are the size of regular bread loaves 😳

user12642379742146 · 06/09/2020 20:47

You're putting baked beans in your toasted sandwiches?

yolio · 06/09/2020 20:48

Toaster pockets for the toaster, FTW. Press them down a bit but it works for ham n cheese anyway.

No need to get antsy. Just try various things out. The toaster pockets are go to in our house anyway.

Herdwick · 06/09/2020 20:49

do you butter the outside of your bread

I think that's mandatory

TheChippendenSpook · 06/09/2020 20:52

Beans are the filling of the gods!

Iamthewombat · 06/09/2020 20:53

Are you Nigel Tufnel?

Love the Nigel Tufnel article, how did you remember that from 2000 !! Sadly, no, I am not him 🤣

@TheChippendenSpook like minds eh, especially with other breakfast fillings 😋

@yolio. Definitely not antsy, as said in thread title, entirely light-hearted 😀

@BarbaraofSeville and @Herdwick I cut slices of bread in half before I toast them. Takes twice as long, but at least they're cooked all over.

LovelyWeekAway · 07/09/2020 16:29

I use the wee Warburtons loaf too
Perfect for toasties!
