Whilst I wasn’t tested at the time I was sick as I wasn’t quite sick enough to be admitted to hospital. I did have an antibodies test (work for NHS and we were tested) which showed a positive result for antibodies.
Anyway, I was sick at the end of March beginning of April and lost my sense of taste and smell like many people. We are now in September and I have still not recovered my sense of smell and have intermittent taste. The only smell I regularly detect is a burning smell, like cigarette smoke in the back of my nose. No one smokes in my house, none of the neighbours smoke in their gardens and no one can smell the smoke. I can only assume my senses are processing all smells as smoke.
Does anyone else have this?

I was ill in March, just before lockdown, and lost my sense of smell. When it came back, it didn't all come back at once, iyswim. One day I noticed I could smell a particular smell, and gradually other smells have come back.

Smoke was among the first smells I could smell. Smelling smoke when there isn't any is weird though.

Grobagsforever · 06/09/2020 15:51

My workmate has this. He is trying to train himself gradually to smell and taste other things

Usuallytootiredbuthappyanyway · 06/09/2020 15:59

yes yes yes! you could be describing me exactly - had it around easter, not tested as not bad enough to be admitted but total loss of taste and smell, when my smell started coming back I could smell faint cigarette smoke 24/7, that was awful and lasted around a week. I still only have limited sense of smell, my sense of taste is back but not 100%. when I can smell things it is sporadic and things don't smell the right way.

Frizzcat · 06/09/2020 16:04

Yes that’s the same for me, sometimes I pick up a faint whiff of something or I have to put something right under my nose to pick up a faint smell.
I feel like I can’t really moan as I got off so lightly compared to so many people, but bloody hell it’s annoying.
I have had the smoke smell a number of times and each time I hope this is the time that my smell will get better, but so far it hasn’t.
Thanks everyone for answering it’s reassuring to know there are other nose dead people out there

Still coughing and short of breath, sense of taste is all wrong and this is since March.

paintmegood · 06/09/2020 16:15

Yeah same as @spanieleyes for me. No loss of taste or smell but still have a cough and tight chest since mid March. Also constantly exhausted. No positive Covid test and not been offered an antibody test. I assume there's no point so long after. I contacted the GP after a month and they were fairly sure it was Covid.

Calyx72 · 06/09/2020 16:20

I had covid from end March, Hospital for 2 days (clexane injections, potassium) and lost taste and smell for approximately 10 days. It returned fine and I slowly recovered.

Fast forward to last month, I started smelling cigarette smoke or burning smells constantly for a few days. I work for NHS and I called occ Health who said it could be a symptom of reinfection so I was tested again, negative result.

It's away now, it took a couple of weeks.

Hope you're back to normal soon Thanks

Happytobeme123 · 06/09/2020 17:02

I had this symptom for one day.

However, I've had the smell of smoke / cigarette smoke around me before (before covid 19 was known about).

Its unpleasant and I have closed the windows in the house thinking someone had a fire, only for the smell to follow me and no-one else being able to smell it.

OoohTheStatsDontLie · 06/09/2020 17:10

I had covid symptoms and lost my sense of taste/ smell completely end of March. It returned really slowly over the next 6-8 weeks but even now it's not what it once was. I can smell strong cooking smells but I have to ask my husband to smell clothes to see if they should be in the clean or dirty pile etc. Not sure whether I'll ever get back to where it was. Not had the smoke smell though

Frizzcat · 06/09/2020 17:11

Yeah spoke to our occ health and they said that since it never returned (smell) and I had no other symptoms then was unlikely. 😳
I experience bouts of extreme fatigue, no energy at all.

When I was sick, my breathing was only laboured if I moved hence why I didn’t end up in hospital but I was unwell for 3wks. I’ve noticed periodic shortness of breath but no return of fever or cough.
I will be taking more care this winter because I do feel a little weaker now, of course that could be psychosomatic but I think I’m going to pay for a flu jab this year.
Has anyone sought advice from your GP?
Hope those of you that are still experiencing the after affects start to recover soon.

Just to give some insight into the level of the loss of smell.
I can’t smell salmon or mackerel being cooked. I can only smell perfume under my nose, once I spray I can’t smell.
If I go into the loo after anyone (who has been in there for a full expulsion workout) I can’t smell it.
I can’t smell bleach, cleaning products or even Zoflora and you can usually smell that from Mars.
I’ve also given everyone third degree tongue burns because I added so much chilli to their food because I can’t taste it and barely feel the heat.

Me too. Not tested but ill in March after a stay in hospital. Smell sporadic now and “odd”, breathless for a month but not too bad now, oh so tired so quickly though. I’d really like a test but have no real reason to deserve one.

Mindymomo · 06/09/2020 17:25

Regarding flu jabs, our gp surgery is starting now doing flu jabs. If you cannot get one with them, most chemists and even Tesco pharmacy are doing them, where you can book online.

lazylinguist · 06/09/2020 17:28

I was never tested but pretty certain I had it back in March. My smell and taste returned after a couple of weeks, but I still sometimes get that burning, smoke smell.

Yes, I don't have the cigarette smell but everything else you've described. Instead of cigarette smell, I do have a kind of rotten smell that seems to be lurking everywhere. I can't smell when I pick up my dogs mess or if they are sick, or burning, or gas. Or coffee. I can smell some flowers sometimes. I can sit next to someone smoking and not smell a thing. I find it quite frightening and I feel a bit cut off from the world. I was ill in March for several weeks but still get fatigue, though that has been better in last couple of weeks.
