I'm so so worried and my anxiety is in overdrive and this is the only place I could think where i may get advice!

I have been having some light bleeding after sex occasionally ( probably 1 in 5 times). Its been happening for about 6 moths so I called my GP and I'm going in for an examination next week.

I have anxiety anyway and now I just can sleep or function properly. I'm worrying about the examination it's self and I've convinced myself it's cervical cancer.

Had anyone had this type of examination and can tell me what to to expect my appointment is with a lovely female gp. Any has anyone had this, what did it turn out to be? I'm really so worried.

Yes I had this some years ago (I ended up more or less bleeding all the time). My smear tests were up to date so I wasn't concerned about cervical cancer but after a vaginal ultrasound (not nasty, just like having a pen put up your vagina, much less uncomfortable than a smear test) they said it was polyps in my uterus. I had them removed and the consultant said I also had cervical erosion (I think it's called something else now, they used to be worried it would lead to cervical cancer but it doesn't) and he thought that that was actually the main cause so sorted that out too. He said it could come back but it's 8 years on now and hasn't.

I have cells on the outside of my cervix which can bleed after sex/tests etc, perfectly normal.

Madre1972 · 06/09/2020 12:40

I had this a few years ago, all normal smears but I had a cervical erosion. I had laser treatment which was about 15 mins of slight discomfort and never had any issues since. I also immediately thought it was cancer. Try not to worry and get your gp to see you ASAP. All the best

Same for me. Bleeding after sex. Dr exam - she found nothing of concern and pretty much said it's not cancer but referred me for the camera which was much less painful than smear. All clear.

BlackeyedSusan · 06/09/2020 12:50

many many people go to worst case scenario when there is something wrong. often it is something not so difficult to sort. hope you manange to sleep and that it is something easily fixed and not too serious.

GabriellaMontez · 06/09/2020 13:21

I'm another one with cervical erosion causing those symptoms.

Apparently being on the pill makes it worse. Although I'm not.

hopeishere · 06/09/2020 13:25

Is it the actual examination. You're worried about? I've fibroids and the exam is simple. Bottom half off, knees up and then a condom covered probe is used. It's a bit weird it going in but not painful.

NaughtipussMaximus · 06/09/2020 13:34

I had something similar - the gp had me lie on the couch and shone a lamp up there (I think using a speculum! She said it looked a bit red so sent me for a colposcopy, and they discovered I had ectropion, which is where the lining of the womb grows over the neck of the cervix - nothing to worry about and apparently can happen if you’re on the Pill.

knittingaddict · 06/09/2020 14:53

I had two incidents like that when I was much younger. On both occasions it was a cervical erosion. I had it cauterised both times and haven't had one since the last time . It sounds worse than it is and is easily treated.

Pushpushpoosh · 06/09/2020 18:53

Thankyou for all of the replies, I'm letting my anxiety get the better of me before I know anything I think. Looking forward to getting it over with!

Yes I have persistent bleeding.

I initially saw my GP. No pain, uncomfortable only.

Referred to Gynaecologist at local hospital for a more through examination and biopsy. He measured the thickness of the lining of the womb - not painful - mine was 7 mm which is quite thick and he said concerning but again didn't mean a major problem.
He took a biopsy - uncomfortable but brief and necessary to have the cells he had take checked for signs of cancer. I bled after the examination. I had previously had an internal scan done which showed no problems ( a year or so before).

Fortunately my results came back that I don't have cervical/womb cancer.

It range from slightly uncomfortable to painful for a brief time and I had a ache similar to a period pain afterwards (was warned about this). I would say take paracetamol an hour before - I didn't.

I understand that many women really worry about internal examinations and they aren't the nicest to go through but it can help save a life long term or put your mind at rest.
I still have frequent bleeding, still no idea why.

Good luck xx Flowers

I bleed quite a lot after sex ( last 4 months) G.P took a look and said she thought was cervical ectropian but referred me to colposcopy as a precaution.
At colposcopy they said it was ectropian but took a biopsy and am currently a
waiting results to check for cell changes. My next smear is due in 2 months and they said to go along to that appointment as usual which I found a bit odd as surely the biopsy would pick up changesConfused.
The procedure will be fine.

Twigletfairy · 06/09/2020 19:05

Have you ever had a smear test? It's the same sort of process just without taking a sample.

I had this due to endometriosis.

Pushpushpoosh · 07/09/2020 13:26

Thankyou all so much my appointment is wrdnessay morning so hope it's nothing sinister but you've helped put my mind at ease about the examination!
