AIBU to want a hysterectomy and how likely is it?

Last 3 periods have been incapacitating on one heavy day each cycle due to awful pain. Ibuprofen or co codamol don't touch the pain and I feel so sick. Flooding to my feet on one occasion. Apparently I have fibroids. I'm 48. Don't massively want to have to take loads of medication. What are people's experiences of how successful they are in getting a hysterectomy? I know they don't whip it out like they used to. Thanks

Had this for 2 years, medication didn’t work. Asked for a hysterectomy at 45, got it with no questions asked.

Operation was painless. I felt I could go back to doing everything as soon as I was out of Recovery. Back to work in two weeks (could easily have gone sooner).

Best thing I ever did. Life is so so much easier now.

I feel sorry for you as it’s just so horrible. Go for the op I say.

I'm waiting for mine due to fibroids- think I might be in for a long wait due to Covid

Garret - I was told at least 6 weeks of work - was your abdominal?

I got put on an NHS waiting list for one. Went private and got the op within 3 weeks. Best decision I ever made.

Mine was abdominal and I was off for 7 weeks. I went back on a phased return, which worked really well. Once the pain from the op has gone away (the first 48 hours were the worst), the main problem is tiredness. I've never felt exhaustion like it - the smallest thing tires you out - so the phased return to work is helpful in regaining stamina.

RaskolnikovsGarret did you have to work your way through loads of meds and other options for the 2 years?

I'm having mine privately but consultant can't get theatre slot as nhs are using them all. I understand that urgent stuff must take priority but been waiting for over two months already

I think it was vaginal, hence the quick recovery.

I did try different meds etc over the years. Don’t know whether they would have objected to doing it earlier had I not had the meds, so it didn’t arise.

Life-changing.
