AIBU to be irked by the 'uptick' in the use of the word Uptick?

Not so long ago it was "clearly" that was the new 'word' but now it seems that the new, overused 'word' is "uptick" (ie: increase).

AIBU to clearly see this increase in the use of 'uptick' as a word?

YANBU. I predict an uptick in the annoyance of the uptick of the word 'uptick' being used.

CyberNan · 05/09/2020 21:51

you are clearly being unreasonable to be irked by the uptick of this word.

HateIsNotGood · 05/09/2020 22:16

Give it time CyberNan, clearly uptick is currently fit for purpose and part of the "strategies" employed by the current commentators to suit their purpose, and 'uptick' might be fit for purpose, after all.

Although I may be UR to still try and get the word "strategies" into an irksome word thread (still trying after 10 years of trying ) - when everyone really meant "strategy".... I clearly haven't 'moved on' from that yet.

This is the very first time I have been aware of this word! What does it mean?

HateIsNotGood · 05/09/2020 22:20

It basically means increase small - if you listen to any radio, audio, tv news, you'll be certain to hear it.

No, not in my comfort zone. Just off for a comfort break then I'll be back with some blue sky thinking.

saveforthat · 05/09/2020 22:20

I've never heard it and thought you meant uptake

Smallsteps88 · 05/09/2020 22:21

Thank you! I shall keep my ears pinned so that I too will become adequately irked at the uptick of uptick Grin
niceupthedance · 05/09/2020 22:21

It annoys the shit out of me

No it's definitely the word of the moment. Like 'gifted' and the nauseating phrase 'reach out' Envy

Freddiefox · 05/09/2020 22:29

Oh it’s drives me mad, hate it.

Along with New normal. Another over used work.

Morfin · 05/09/2020 22:29

I first heard this word in the govt briefing, since then it's been more contagious than Covid-19.

HateIsNotGood · 05/09/2020 22:29

Keep em 'pinned' people - you'll soon be irked now you know - until the next word of course.

whistles off, content

Never heard it!

SherlocksDeerstalker · 05/09/2020 22:29

Can I hate ‘ripped through’....? Please, just STOP SAYING IT!!!

Mypathtriedtokillme · 05/09/2020 22:38

It the sort of word that would be happily at home on a Bullshit word Bingo game a coworker and I played in marketing meetings.

BashfulClam · 05/09/2020 23:09

Not heard it but would probably think they were saying ‘uptake’

Suze1621 · 05/09/2020 23:12

Never heard it either

whywhywhy6 · 06/09/2020 00:03

Also have ‘reached out’ ... 😡

Mamette · 06/09/2020 00:07

We should drill down into the stats on the numericals of the uptick in uptick use.

MsTSwift · 06/09/2020 00:09

Any “expert” on Covid on radio 4 will use this word at least once.Agree annoying. Other annoyances~

“In the middle of a global pandemic” - keep your hair on

Normal behaviour like going to a beach now described as “flocking” or “swarming”

MsTSwift · 06/09/2020 00:10

I also find the word “shielding” annoying I know that is probably unfair but I do.

Nottobesoldseparately · 06/09/2020 00:15

First time I've ever heard the word so it can't be used that much.

BrandyandBabycham · 06/09/2020 00:22

Never heard of it
