How do people change career?

I want to leave teaching. I have been a supply teacher for 4 years, never felt passionate enough to get a permanent job. I love working with children but I just don't feel a passion for the teaching career.

I want to move on to something else, more of a support worker role (not saying anything too specific as I don't want to give too much away) but these jobs I see advertised make me feel excited unlike when I see a teaching job,

I don't know, I just feel like i've lost the passion I had when I graduated.

I have savings to last me for a few months whilst I look but is now a bad time to even think about career changing with the recession? I was even thinking of doing some volunteer work.

Don't get me wrong, I love going into schools, seeing the children and teaching but I just don't feel that passion anymore.

You just look for something else you fancy doing, find out how to get into it, and do that.

I went from a research analyst job, into adult education. I had to do a Preparing To Teach qualification, which i did in my own time. Then i found a job in the field i wanted, and really enjoyed it. I changed career again earlier this year, because i found something i liked better and was better at, with many more opportunities.

I wouldnt ever jump ship from one career without having an idea of somewhere to go.

Apply for the job that appeals, if you get it, great, if you don’t, ask for feedback and work towards being a better candidate next time.

@Tany5555 - I would recommend engaging the service of a career coach! Worth every penny.
I’ve been through some changes recently and I am so glad I talked to someone who could look at my skill set objectively and advise me on next steps. (Without me feeling too embarrassed!)

All the best! I hope you find a job that makes you happy (and still pays the bills) 👍👍

I did a professional qualification to enable me to work in a new field.

I applied for a job in a different (but related) field, wasn't at all sure I'd get it, but I did and haven't looked back. It really was that simple! Good luck OP.

careerchangerranger · 05/09/2020 19:15

Similar to @PlateTectonics I saw an opportunity in an unrelated field, didn't think I would get it...but I did. I start next month!

If it's really, really unrelated then you usually take a junior role with a paycut. I have just done this after being made redundant as a retail buyer. There was no way I was jumping into another retail-shaped frying pan and potentially being let go in 6 months so I've switched to something unrelated to people buying stuff they don't need.

I’ve just switched career at 47, do it. Worked in Fashion all my life, now in Finance. In a couple of years I will be earning much more in a less bitchy competitive career can also go self employed and pick my own hours, I figured I still have 20+ years to work it might as well be something I want to do.
