Learning to Drive at fifty six

Guess I am posting this here as I am strengthening my resolve.

Ten years back I had done a years worth of driving lessons and passed theory but then went through a divorce and didn't pick it up again was too caught up in building a new life.

But now I'm hoping to pick it up. I've just done a driving theory test online for free and passed it. So I'm hoping that the skills in there can be revived and my confidence will grow.

I've got an amount of money due to me in about nine months time so hoping I might be able to get my license and do it that way. DD is now 15 so part of me wants to do it to set an example. Any thoughts. DD has just asked if we can get a hybrid.

I've just looked and new they are about 24 K and second hand maybe 8K.Any thoughts, I seem to be a late starter in life on many things...

So am I or aren't I being unreasonable to think that this would be doable

You’re not too old.. my ma passed her tests when she was 64!

carbon60 · 05/09/2020 23:29

I passed when I was 54, I had to give up motorbikes because I had a knee problem. Took me a year ,1 lesson a week and no practice , so I say go for it!

You can absolutely learn to drive. 2 women in my family learnt when they retired!
I would recommend doing motorway lessons once you pass your test and/or doing a few extra lessons if there are bits you find tricky still.

Just a few years behind you, OP and about to pick it up again myself, before DS beats me to it, as he keeps boasting. Good luck!

I found it terrifying to learn to drive at 18 OP, let alone later in life.

It’s absolutely doable imo, am reminded here of the story of the person who studied to be a Dr in their twilight years.

A fellow student enquired as to whether they were not a bit too long in the tooth to embark on such an endeavour & the person replied ‘i’ll be whether i do this or not so may as well give it a go’

I always think of that when the ‘too old’ thoughts threaten to overtake :)

My Dad was 70something when he learnt to drive. Took him two attempts to pass the test. I was impressed!
