Was I being unreasonable/ungrateful about the car?

DH took the car to full up the tank last night. Turns up 2.5hrs later on a flatbed truck. Turns out there was a cracked fuel line or something like that and the car basically recreated Niagara Falls in petrol on the Shell Garage forecourt.

The breakdown recovery agent, who was sent by the insurance company and is from a reputable national company, told me and DH that the fuel had leaked to below the crack now, so the car was safe on the driveway in the short term as it was no longer actively dripping. He also gave us the number of a mobile mechanic who is booked to come in about 20 mins to hopefully fix it.

I was telling my grandfather last night and he started insisting that a) I call the fire brigade and have them pump the petrol out; and b) Don’t trust a mobile mechanic (who he said wouldn’t show up) and use the garage in town.

I replied that the breakdown agent had said it was safe, and that there’s no harm in having the mobile mechanic take a look at it, as the local garage can’t even fit me in to look at it until Tuesday.

He replied that he didn’t see how it could be safe, and he’s “only going on 80 years of experience”

Now, I work in one of those sectors where everyone has an opinion and thinks they could do a better job than the professionals who have trained for a minimum of four years to even get near the frontline; and six years until their trusted on their own... so I will admit this pushed a button and I was a little short when I replied “and how many of those 80 years are as a mechanic?” (The correct answer is none)

This, apparently makes me ungrateful for his help and unreasonably putting peoples safety at risk.

No, he was being a mansplaining twonk.

Baconking · 05/09/2020 11:47

It doesn't sound like you asked for his help and were just telling him what happened so yanbu

The fire brigade would not be happy at being called out to drain a petrol tank.

Update. The mobile mechanic has just turned up and fixed it for £30

Glad it's all fixed, and for a reasonable price too!!

Hope you still have some petrol in the tank too!

I think you were a little unreasonable in your reply to your grandfather, he was just trying to help. I would have responded, well the mechanic is coming, let's see what he says first'.
