School PE

Yes it's trivial but AIBU to be annoyed I've been told on Friday evening that the kids will be travelling to school in their PE kit on PE day and staying in it all day? This means I've had to order another pair of trainers for Monday. Managed to find some trail running ones with a grip sole and water resistance. His feet would be soaked if travelling in his usual PE trainers. His school shoes keep his feet dry but ordinary trainers won't. PE is first lesson so if they get wet through outside they will be sat in lessons in wet PE kit all day

It's the norm in Aussie primary schools - kids go to school in sport/PE uniform the day they have PE. No getting changed, lost uniform etc. Most kids like it and it works well. I bet once people get used to it they won't want to change back.

YewHedge · 06/09/2020 23:04

Forecast is nice for Monday. Why will his feet be soaking?

bubblebubblebubbletrouble · 06/09/2020 23:16

The short notice is unfortunate. I have the opposite trainer issue. I bought ddw a 2nd pair because I thought pe kit would be left at school like it was when she was back in June and now they will be wearing them all day.
On the flipside I'm scrabbling around for a 2nd pair of trackies for dd2 because her PE days are back to back & she might have to wear a white polo shirt instead of PE t-shirt til new one arrives from school uniform supplier.
But we'll manage - and if it's not working school will re-think it like they did with drop offs after the disaster of day 1. It's new to everyone.

HerNameWasEliza · 06/09/2020 23:37

If it’s spitting they will wear a coat and stay on the playground.

I don't really get this? I am talking more about secondary school so often the kids have adult bodies with extra sweat. Doing any significant exercise will leave them wet (with sweat if nothing else). They will be warm before the work out, no worries. But after? Sitting in wet clothes makes people cold in most weathers and certainly in winter.

That's not been my experience with trainers btw when they are soaked BTW. They probably do let sweat evaporate, but not significant amounts of rain and surface water.

Procrastination4 · 06/09/2020 23:47

Cut PE from the curriculum this year. That would solve all problems. Let kids get their exercise in their own time when they can shower and change as necessary. (But THAT solution is going to raise objections too...Wink)

HerNameWasEliza · 06/09/2020 23:50

@Procrastination4

I do wonder if it might come to that if the practicalities can't be addressed (though that would NOT be teacher's fault!).

SeekingCoffee33 · 07/09/2020 01:08

My children’s school are doing this. I draw the line at sending them into school for the whole day in shorts and a T-shirt... so I’ll be sending them in their outdoor pe kit instead

Procrastination4 · 07/09/2020 11:16

@HerNameWasEliza, I think any measure is preferable to closing schools again, to be honest. I’m a teacher (not in UK) and school has changed greatly as it is. I’d far prefer a very limited curriculum but able to stay open safely and teach rather than trying to have school subjects as they were but end up shutting down. It’s tougher in secondary schools though-or at least in my country anyway, where a lot of PE teachers just teach PE (though they have one other subject(at least) in their degree too.) Still, every avenue should be explored rather than trying to have schools as they were and being forced to close as a consequence.

GetOffYourHighHorse · 07/09/2020 11:28

It's crazy. Surely PE could be put on hold for now and they could focus on the actual education they've all missed?

Yes, yes lots of obese kids but that is down to some parents feeding them shit and driving them the 15mins walk to school rather than encourage a healthy lifestyle. An hour freezing on a football pitch once a week won’t make a blind bit of difference to that. Why should kids sit in sweaty tops and baggy shorts all day?!

Alexandernevermind · 07/09/2020 11:34

Now if I was in charge kids would attend school in PE kit permanently, so they could actually move around.

minipie · 07/09/2020 11:36

Honestly I think staying in PE kit all day makes perfect sense and I wish they did this in normal times. Until age 9/10 anyway.

All the changing is such a waste of children’s and teachers’ time.

I accept once puberty hits and children sweat and smell more it’s different.

GetOffYourHighHorse · 07/09/2020 11:39

I dont even understand the rationale. Why is getting changed an issue? They seem to be conflating changing rooms at school with changing rooms in shops which are closed, but the fact is the kids are putting their own clothes on and off!

megletthesecond · 07/09/2020 11:40

Mine are going in and staying in PE kit all day on PE days. But on wet days they're only doing PE theory in class, no indoor PE for the foreseeable future.

minipie · 07/09/2020 11:46

Getoffyourhighhorse for the younger ages, teachers help a LOT with changing.

Ah right. I presumed all school age kids, barring any with special needs, would undress and dress independently.
The4Seasons · 07/09/2020 13:25

Generally I agree with wearing PE kits on the days you have PE. However DD has just started Yr7 and has dance twice a week (in addition to PE and Games, ). She's gone in today wearing a leotard and tights under her tracksuit- going to the toilet during the day in going to be a monumental pain in the arse!

Elsewyre · 07/09/2020 13:27

@Bunnybigears

Surely having PE trainers that let your feet get soaking wet was a bad idea anyway. They still do PE in the rain you know.
Unless you're paying a fortune for goretex pe tends to make your shoes wet from the I side if they're "waterproof"
Devlesko · 07/09/2020 13:30

I don't know why they bother with PE anymore, anyway.
My dd hasn't done any at school all through secondary. Fair enough if they want to choose it as an option, but not everyone enjoys it.
They can still keep fit/ join extra curricular groups or go to the gym.

GetOffYourHighHorse · 07/09/2020 13:51

'don't know why they bother with PE anymore, anyway.'

I know it's so outdated. Why force teenage girls for example to play football when that's last thing they'd ever choose to do for fitness.

PE teachers need to get a bit more up to date! Fitness classes would be popular or even yoga. Maybe the theory of health and fitness. Teach kids not to eat crap and to walk to school. I despair when I hear they're being forced to do rugby. Madness.

unchienandalusia · 07/09/2020 13:57

Oh come on OP. You're just looking for things to moan about!

HandfulofDust · 07/09/2020 13:59

I don't really understand what shoes you're wearing for PE which don't keep feet dry? What if they do PE outside after it's been raining? Mine just wear white trainers for PE.

SpaceOP · 07/09/2020 14:01

I don't really mind and it was obvious this would probably happen. But I was annoyed with myself for not anticipating it as DD's PE shorts are very short. Fine for PE but she'd freeze wearing those all day. But am going to send her in trackies instead.

edwinbear · 07/09/2020 14:15

What sort of PE does your DC do OP, where he doesn't need trainers that can get wet? What trainers would you normally buy for PE in the Autumn/Winter terms, when it rains? Confused

minipie · 07/09/2020 14:16

I’m guessing the OP has bought the canvas plimsoll type trainers for PE which are no good in the rain.

notso · 07/09/2020 16:45

I don't know about OP but mine have had to have these* for primary PE indoors and have worn thesee sort of thing for outdoor PE.
Neither are suitable for walking to school on a wet day.
