Wearing a mask to school pick up or drop off?

Entrance and exit gates and surroundings of Junior school are seriously crowded at both times. No one is social distancing i.e. the 2 metre rule. And no one, apart from the odd Grandma or NHS worker home from work, is wearing a mask. I wore a mask once (on DH's insistence) and got eye rolls and funny looks. Yes the kids are in a bubble - poor teachers aren't magicians though and schools aren't magically covid-proof. And kids from different bubbles get mixed up in the big scrum of parents at pick up time.

I'm confused TBH am I in the wrong to wear a mask? Is it considered safe not to because we're all in the open yadda-yadda and/or its all just an overreaction.

YABU - to wear a mask

YANBU - it's a sensible precaution

Thank you.

Our school have made it mandatory on drop off/pickup.

TheTurnOfTheScrew · 04/09/2020 18:01

our school has politely asked us to wear masks at pick up, and IMO it's sensible given the cramped waiting space. The teachers are wearing them for pick up as well. Most parents aren't bothering though Hmm.

YANBU to wear one, completely your choice.

I am literally the only person wearing one at ours. 600 kids in the school (primary) and just me wearing one at pick up and drop off. And I get some pretty odd looks but I’ve decided I’d rather that than catch or spread Covid

EatDessertFirst · 04/09/2020 18:09

Its entirely up to you. The teachers are wearing them at drop off/pick up but I've only seen a few parents wearing them. I don't personally, but I observe social distancing and don't hang around once DS is in/out.

Social distancing seems to have gone out of the window between parents at our school. Clusters in the playground because they don't want to walk another 20 feet in order to spread out for pick uo and numerous parents chatting across pavements where people are trying to walk through. Same parents that were preaching about the roolz and agonising on whether or not to send their kids back Hmm

No one is at our school but it’s one form entry, Max 20 in a class and staggered drop off/ pick up so easy to stay distanced.

Brighterthansunflowers · 04/09/2020 18:25

Why would you be unreasonable to wear one? You wearing it is your choice and benefits others if you’re unknowingly spreading coronavirus, but otherwise affects no one.

Serena1977 · 04/09/2020 18:34

Its mandatory at ours with the head on the gate as you get to school.
Frankly in order to not cause the school to close, hubby off work not earning, I'll do anything I can to avoid disruption.

Dementedswan · 04/09/2020 18:36

We have to wear them at my dc primary school.

Picklypickles · 04/09/2020 18:40

Our school has asked parents to wear them and most are, I did see one mum throwing a hissy fit at the head teacher at pick-up today when he politely asked if she could wear a mask, she dramatically flounced off whilst snarkily commenting she didn't see the point in wearing them outside.

Mywifeandkids1 · 04/09/2020 18:43

I really, really can’t see the point. But up to you.

Its busy at our kids drop off/pick up but I'm stood closer than 2mts to another person for 30 seconds max and I think that its probably perfectly safe (from what I've read, although its obviously not that clear right now). Not unreasonable at all to wear one but I don't personally feel the need
