To consider booking a holiday next month

I've been set against going on holiday at the moment but I've been thinking about it more this week and I'm not sure. My OH is 30 soon and I am planning on booking a trip somewhere for us. I'm really struggling with ideas. Originally the plan was abroad but that changed when Covid happened. What are people's opinions on this? This would potentially be our last holiday abroad as a couple as we plan on ttc the start of next year. It would only be for around 4 nights somewhere short haul but one minute I'm set against it and the next I'm seriously considering it. If it wasn't his 30th and we weren't planning on ttc soon then I would definitely put a holiday on hold until a later time.

I’d do a break here somewhere remote or plan a special evening to mark the birthday instead.

I’d not want the last abroad holiday I had to be remembered for the masks, SD, risk of carrying the virus etc. There’s the risk of quarantine too as it’s constantly changing.

Waxonwaxoff0 · 04/09/2020 14:37

Could you quarantine on return? Anywhere could get added to the list at short notice which is why I'm holding off.

reluctantbrit · 04/09/2020 14:40

We plan something very short notice for the October half term. We cancelled three holidays and trips and had one week in Scotland since January.

We will keep our mind open what and where but we need a break.

If you are prepared to not being able to cancel and get your money back I would start looking for options and book in the last minute.

SqidgeBum · 04/09/2020 14:45

Once you book it and you are prepared to quarantine for 2 weeks at home after, then go for it.

Stannisbaratheonsboxofmatches · 04/09/2020 15:01

Yes I think it’s fine as long as you are prepared to quarantine for two weeks if the rules change

pinkfruits · 04/09/2020 15:03

If I did book somewhere abroad then I would definitely do it last minute. If the quarantine rules came into place whilst I was already there, colleagues have said work will pay your normal wage. OH wouldn't though I don't think. It's so risky! Like everyone else though, I just really feel like we need a break!

If you aren’t going to be paid can you afford two weeks off?

pinkfruits · 04/09/2020 15:14

I have savings but I would probably take 1 week unpaid and maybe the other in annual leave if it came to that

What I did was checked which country/area had one of the lowest virus rates and booked there as had least chance of a surprise quarantine. Been and returned with zero issues. Mask on flight was a bit rubbish and a warm wearing one in August heat once there (although only after 6pm at that point) but you’d need a mask on hols in this country anyway so no different. Just have a plan A and a plan B and wait til nearer the time.

pinkfruits · 04/09/2020 15:34

@ItsAllAFugazi good idea. Can I ask where you went and where do you have to wear masks? Is it in all shops/bars/restaurants unless sat down eating/drinking. Are beaches ok? I don't know anybody that been recently, but I do have a few colleagues going away this month.

DP and I have just booked a long weekend in Germany. We've been keeping an eye on the numbers and they're low enough that I'm confident they won't be added to the quarantine list whilst we're there. If it changes before we go, we have free cancellation on the hotels and our travel insurance should cover the ferry. But if it doesn't and we lose out on less than £200 I'm ok with that. I financially could survive a 2 week quarantine but I work for a small business and it's unfair on my boss so we've done everything we can to minimise the risk of having to quarantine on return.

Wejustdontknow · 04/09/2020 15:55

We have decided we are going to go away for October half term, we are ok with having to quarantine if rules change whilst we are away, we ideally want somewhere warm so have been looking at the Canary Islands but I am trying not to get my hopes up as we are more than likely going to end up either in a caravan somewhere in rainy England or at home. If your happy to quarantine then go for it

EatDessertFirst · 04/09/2020 16:05

Personally, I couldn't and wouldn't go abroard as I couldn't afford to quarantine. If you can, then go for it! Just don't be one of those that rants to yhe media or sadfaces at the airport because you are surprised by sudden but not unexpected restrictions Wink.

Meruem · 04/09/2020 16:18

It’s not so much the quarantine upon coming home, but the fact that it’s likely in a months time there won’t be many places you can go without quarantine on arrival. Our rates are going up all the time and what with schools going back I don’t see that getting better. Personally I’d say if you want to do it then make it ASAP before we’re not allowed in anywhere (without quarantine). I’ve done 2 trips since restrictions were lifted and already one of those countries won’t allow you in now without quarantine, and I think the other country is close to that.

CorianderLord · 04/09/2020 20:22

I just did 🤷‍♀️ we work from home so can easily isolate if need be. Under 30 so relatively low risk. I'm going mad trapped in this bloody city.

Torvean32 · 05/09/2020 02:15

Why dont you try the western isles. You could rent a cottage. There's lots of beautiful beaches and the scenery is stunning

ChanceChanceChance · 05/09/2020 03:24

I'm another who thinks things could change a lot in a month.

Can you book the leave now and then decide at the last.minute where to go? I agree there could be outbound quarantine soon.

We just holidayed at home and to be honest when you throw a ibt of money at that it's not too bad!

Soulstirring · 05/09/2020 03:32

We’ve just returned from Turkey. Mask wearing wasn’t as bad as expected on the plane etc. Hygiene in the hotel was amazing. We had a great time and would go again! We picked it for the low quarantine risk compared to other destinations
