To just feed them to them anyway

DH Impulse bought some Lamb Kofta Kebabs from Costco on Tuesday. Fed them to DH and DS(23) Neither was that impressed with them. I wasn’t either as I’d already done a food shop and freezer and fridge was now full. Even if I did have space in the freezer they would sit there forever. I couldn’t eat them as they have ingredients I don’t tolerate.
So no one checked the storage/use by instructions and now I’m not 100% sure if they’ll be ok, given that they are made from minced lamb.
I gave them a sniff and they seem absolutely fine...but I won’t be the one eating them! I’m pissed off about feeling bad about potential food waste that I didn’t create. I should just feed them to them shouldn’t I?

I get that the food waste is annoying but if you’re not sure when the use by date was or is then I’d be getting rid.

Dandeliondrops · 04/09/2020 13:33

Can't you chop them up and do something a bit more creative and add some flavours?

If they didn't like them before and they are now out of date, you'll need to do something to sell them as a meal!

LaurieSchafferIsAllBitterNow · 04/09/2020 13:38

i would be loathe to waste them, especially if they smell fine.

Can you go a bit moussaka with them... saute plenty of onions, celery, garlic, brown off the meat, lots of tomatoes, oregano, red wine

and of course DO NOT even hint that dinner is made from the left over shitty koftas! :o

JesusSufferingFuck22 · 04/09/2020 13:40

I don’t know the use by date.....and I probably should resort to old catering mantra of “if in doubt, chuck it out.”

JesusSufferingFuck22 · 04/09/2020 13:43

Laurieshaferisallbitternow I was thinking of taking the meat of the skewers and browning it all off....that’d give me another couple or so days to figure out what to do with it...assuming it smells ok when it’s cooked.

Bin them, your DH and DD didn't like them anyway.

Or, to make sure he doesn't buy any more next time, cook the lot and they can have them tonight!

THisbackwithavengeance · 04/09/2020 13:48

If they smell fine, they'll be fine. Just cook them well.

I wouldn't waste them personally. Put them in wraps with lots of salad and sauce. Yum.

SchrodingersImmigrant · 04/09/2020 13:52

It's only Friday. They will be fine. Brown onion, the meat, add canned tomatoes and spices and served with rice or smth.

RedCatBlueCat · 04/09/2020 13:53

Bought 3 days ago, and smell fine? I'd cook them for DH and DS tonight.

Thisismytimetoshine · 04/09/2020 13:55

They're past their sell by and nobody liked them anyway Confused
Bin.

Lamb does not spoil quickly.

Fink · 04/09/2020 14:35

Even if they went out of date on the day after he bought them, which you don't know, they can't be more than two days out of date. I would definitely use them if they smell and look alright. If you're feeling kind you can use them in a sauce which disguises the flavour they didn't like.

imnotimportant · 04/09/2020 14:37

Lamb lasts quite well in the fridge , can you jazz them up with a sauce and serve with rice and salsa ? , turn them into meatballs ( I did this with some burgers ) and serve with pasta jazz up with spices , salad and put into flatbreads ? , lamb kebabs with mint or coriander , makes them taste completely different

FooFighter99 · 04/09/2020 14:40

If they look fine (no visible signs of mould) and the smell fine (they don't make you gag and recoil in horror) then they'll be fine!

What is it with this ridiculous culture of throwing food away because of a date printed on packaging that's there to safeguard the supplier, not the consumer. We waste so much food because we can't trust our own judgement

If food isn't visibly mouldy and doesn't smell like death then get it eaten!

I am with you on that. The dates are not 100% thing anyway. It's to keep us from suing the manufacturer if it goes wrong basically.

It's only a month or so when it came out that dates on red meat should be considerably longer. I am sure it's not just red meat.

Tootletum · 04/09/2020 14:48

I second the moussaka idea, they usually contain mint, as does moussaka, so it's an ideal use.

Stannisbaratheonsboxofmatches · 04/09/2020 14:57

I’d probably be annoyed that I was left with this dilemma if I were you!

Thisismytimetoshine · 04/09/2020 14:57

Well, if it was something I really liked I'd be ok with it, tbf...
But nobody did like them.

TenDays · 04/09/2020 15:09

Given that nobody likes them, you don't have space for them and you're not sure if they're fresh enough, here's my idea:

I'd grill them or put them in the bottom of the oven when something else was cooking, then cut them up and give them to the ducks/fish/birds at the park.

JesusSufferingFuck22 · 04/09/2020 16:33

Feeding to ducks or other animals is a nice idea but they smell pretty garlicky😂
I’m thinking I’ll just cook them and see if anyone gets too lazy to make a sandwich for themselves and ends up eating them for lunch tomorrow.

‘My husband bought some food nobody liked, and now I think it might have gone off. Should I cook something I know people will hate and might be dangerous to boot?’

Throw the bloody things away!

JesusSufferingFuck22 · 04/09/2020 17:21

I don’t think they’re off. My nose says they are fine. Packet was opened on Tuesday and they’ve been in the fridge in a sealed container since then. I just didn’t know the use by date or how many days they give you to cook them once the packet is opened.
Just off the phone to DH. He deems them fit for human consumption and wants his on his pizza Grin
Thank you all for your input.

TurkeyTrot · 04/09/2020 17:25

OP, you do realise you will have to divorce DH for eating Lamb Kofta Kebab pizza.

(They would probably be nice in pitta bread with spicy tomato sauce, tsatsiki and shredded lettuce).

LaurieSchafferIsAllBitterNow · 04/09/2020 17:29

ooh pizza...meat feast stylee...good call! Or fold it all up and make it a calzone
