Help re rescue dog

Hi I'm collecting a dog from our neighbours on Saturday that is in terrible condition. He's 13 ish, cries constantly and bangs into shit in the garden. He lives in a kennel and the rspca is not interested so I'm going to get him on Saturday. Obviously the first thing we need to do is take him to the vet, but he stinks so maybe he'll need a wash first?

He's so passive it makes me so sad, he's never been for a walk and it's only now we're able to talk to the neighbour about maybe giving him up.

Do we keep him away from our other dog? And he's never been inside so how do we transition him? I'm not a green dog owner but I've never actually picked a dog up away from its neglectful owners before.

Poor old boy..Sad

OP, you are wonderful, thank you for trying to make poor Keith's life better. What sort of wicked person lets a dog get into such a state (your post has made me cry). Please let us know how he gets on, I think we are all rooting for him Star

amusedtodeath1 · 12/09/2020 17:30

OP, thank you for looking after the Old guy, he may not have much time left but at least he will know he is loved Flowers

The picture with his little head on the cushion made me cry. Knowing it’s the first time he’s had a soft place to rest his head, at his age. Absolutely appalling how he’s been treated.

A gutted washing machine for a kennel. That must have been freezing in winter. Some people shouldn’t be allowed to keep animals. I never understand how people can watch animals suffer and feel nothing.
A friend of mine took on a severely neglected dog kept in similar conditions all it’s life. Fortunately it was only 6-7 by the time she took him home. He also had some severe, painful long-term infections/ conditions that needed significant vet care.
You are wonderful OP. Thank you fir what you are doing for him. Even if you need to take a decision to pts in coming days/weeks, at least know that you ended his suffering and gave him some love and comfort (and medical care!) in his final days.

I wish people who weren’t enjoying/ neglecting their pets would give them up to a rescue and let them have a 2nd chance at a decent life. Why keep an animal you don’t want and can’t be arsed looking after?
Anyway rant over. This sort of deliberate neglect just upsets me so much. How does that saying go- “the more I learn about people, the more I love my dogs” ... indeed.
Thanks again OP.

Ah, he looks so sweet. You're an angel for giving him a loving home even if it ends up being a short time.

OliviaBenson · 12/09/2020 18:29

This has made me so sad. 13 years of living like that. Can the vet report the owners to the rspca? I think the kindest thing might be to put him to sleep but at least he will have known love and kindness in the end.

Lovely beautiful Keith xx

Pacif1cDogwood · 12/09/2020 19:59

He's so sweet! Smile

Goodoldfashionedploverboy · 12/09/2020 20:09

Oh, OP, your post has made me cry. I am rooting for Keith to get stronger and have some happy months/ years with you, but most of all I am just so grateful he is in the care of someone who will put his welfare first and make decisions on that basis. Bless you, lovely OP.

pigsDOfly · 12/09/2020 20:11

Heart breaking poor little chap.

Even if you need to have him pts, and it does sound like that's likely, you have done something very special in taking in this poor dog and giving him at least a few days or weeks of love and comfort Flowers

RandomMess · 12/09/2020 20:11

I guess see how it goes and know you showed him love and kindness at the end and another dog for reassurance.

Bless you c

Noted · 12/09/2020 20:17

Oh he's such a gorgeous boy OP, thank you for taking him in. Heartbreaking to think of the life he's had. I would also give it a few weeks to see if there's any improvement. Meanwhile you can use a rolled up towel under his abdomen like a sling to help him out to the toilet if his back legs are giving way.

Geesus68 · 12/09/2020 20:18

Oh god love him, I’ve just cried seeing his picture. What a gorgeous wee thing he is.

Whatever happens you’ve shown him kindness and love and he’s warm and safe, I hope your neighbours rot in hell for allowing him to get in such a state.

Give Keith a little chin scratch from me, I’ll be rooting for him

Pacif1cDogwood · 12/09/2020 20:21

And I love a good 'human' name for a dog.
I know a Brian and a Frank Grin
Keith now gets added to that list.

BellaVita · 12/09/2020 20:22

Thank you for rescuing him. You are an absolute angel xx

Floralnomad · 12/09/2020 20:23

Well done OP , I agree with the other posters , if he doesn’t deteriorate give it a couple of weeks to see if he improves and then make a decision , at worst he will at least have had the experience of being a cared for dog . Seriously what is the matter with people and shame on the RSPCA .

Honeyroar · 12/09/2020 22:02

I agree too. I’d try to give him some time to settle and see if he can cope as he is for a while and have some time to feel safe and relaxed before quietly putting to sleep if nothing can really be done.

Well done OP. (I really want to come round and smash all your neighbour’s windows. The horrible bastards!)

CSIblonde · 13/09/2020 00:25

Oh that picture. He's beautiful. I'm glad he seems to like your dog too ,that could help him hugely emotionally .Bless you for caring OP. Definitely see if decent nutrition & antibiotics make a difference. Infected teeth can make them feel rotten but external tumours are very often benign. I can't believe the RSPCA, he was clearly suffering, that's the yardstick they're supposed to use to remove or prosecute. Please, please keep us updated.

Morning
wondering how Kieth is ? He looks such a lovely old guy , so pleased you took him in

Purplepixiedust · 18/09/2020 09:18

Aw he is lovely and so are you for helping him. Give him a couple of weeks. Food, comfort and medication will likely make all the difference to him. He will also be become familiar with his surroundings which will help if he can’t see. Good luck Keith!

He is adorable and I love the name Keith for a dog, I had a border who we had to PTS in February and we miss him so much. I'm quite teary reading this thread at how Keith must have suffered.
Borders are stoic little dogs and often hide pain and discomfort well. I really hope you can get his teeth sorted and give him a lovely few months at the end of his life he deserves at least that.
