To ask if your knees hurt?

I'm just wondering how normal it is for your knees to hurt. I always saw this as a typical saying when we get older...

I'm 26 and trying to lunge is painful. It's uncomfortable and a pain but not so bad I can't do it, although I do have to stop how far I go.

Is this normal? I saw it as normal as my mum has arthritis but now I'm wondering why people can do it so easily in fitness videos!

Btw I'm a healthy weight

No, it's not normal! I'm nearly 70 and my knees don't hurt unless I've injured one of them.

Can you kneel and sit on your heels?

RedHelenB · 03/09/2020 22:50

One of mine does but its arthritis. Really quite painful. Didnt hurt at your age though.

Elinda · 03/09/2020 22:51

Yes mine does. Exactly as you describe it. I have no problem sitting down on my feet though, can sit for ages with feet flat on the ground. It is the movement that causes it. I've had this all my life.

Oysterbabe · 03/09/2020 22:51

Mine do. I'm nearly 40. They hurt when I was your age too.

AgeLikeWine · 03/09/2020 22:51

I’m in my 50s, and my knees don’t hurt at all. It sounds like the exercises you are doing aren’t right for your body and you should probably stop doing them. We are all different and have different levels of suppleness and flexibility.

Lizzie523 · 03/09/2020 22:52

Yes mine hurt but they hurt less since I've lost a bit of weight. I'm 28.

ProudMarys · 03/09/2020 22:52

My knees always click walking up stairs but don't hurt. I'm 38 and normal weight also. Have you had an injury? I have no idea why my my knees click but it's been happening for 2 years now.

2pinkginsplease · 03/09/2020 22:52

At the grand old age of 43 I ended up at the doctor with severe knee pain and got a mri scan which showed wear and tear was causing the pain.

They said it’s a problem for many people over the age of 30, I just need to take painkillers and do strengthening exercises that physio gave me.

Boulshired · 03/09/2020 22:53

I use to do circuit style training and my knees did hurt. Doing stuff like burpees, tuck jumps and lunge jumps especially when my competitive side kicked in. I changed my style of exercise and the pain went away. I am now 50s and no knee pain.

Summerhillsquare · 03/09/2020 22:57

Yes. But then I was daft enough to start running at 38 and knacker them.

Laufeythejust · 03/09/2020 23:05

Are you sure you’re lunging correctly? Doing lunges and squats with incorrect form really hurts my knees. It took a few weeks of adapted ones (using a step) before I could do it properly without hurting myself.

rosiejaune · 03/09/2020 23:36

Try supplementing vitamin K2.

SerenDippitty · 03/09/2020 23:49

Mine do a bit. Been told it's wear and tear but no worse than average for my age - I'm 59. I can kneel and sit on my heels but I can't go down on my haunches.

ErrolTheDragon · 03/09/2020 23:53

59, a bit overweight, knees are fine.
I walk a lot, but I've never done much running.

user127819 · 03/09/2020 23:56

Mine have hurt in cold damp weather since I was 15.

CandyLeBonBon · 03/09/2020 23:57

I'm 51 and my knees are agony most of the time but I led a very active life and I'm paying for it now! Knackered both ACLs doing taekwondo. I was as nimble as fuck at 26 though. Sounds like your meniscus might be a bit flappy!

1Morewineplease · 03/09/2020 23:59

At your age, no.
I'm mid fifties and they're not great but then, I'm overweight.

shazshaz · 04/09/2020 00:00

Yes, mine was all to do with my gait - I have flat feet and a hyper mobile pelvis. Orthotics helped a lot.

CardinalCat · 04/09/2020 00:05

Have you had a PT or gym trainer check your form? If your knees hurt while doing a lunge it's possible that your posture is wrong and your core not engaged. Or you could have a knee issue which could have a variety of causes/ treatments- worth seeing a physio if you are happy that your form is correct but it still hurts. I'm mid 40s and I run, do high impact aerobics and kick boxing and my knees are fine- however I do a lot of weight training and yoga to strengthen my body, and I take a lot of omega 3 which helps so much, I notice if I forget to take it on holiday with me.

ShastaBeast · 04/09/2020 00:06

It could be your alignment isn’t quite right/tight muscles pulling the joints. My ankles are squiffy and it has led to a twist in the leg, muscles pulling at my knee and my pelvis is very sore, then right up my back. Exercise helps but it has to be the right type and not making it worse - get to a physio to check your alignment and suggest some exercises to help and which to avoid.

DustyMaiden · 04/09/2020 00:52

My DF complains his knee hurts, he’s 88.

Moraxella · 04/09/2020 04:55

Yes! Similar age and BMI is fine. I never do jump lunges between sides (how does joe wicks do it?!) always do them slowly as I’m worried I’m killing my knees. I’m trying to work on my form and find it hurts my knees less if you concentrate on coming out of the lunge by pushing down on the heel of the front leg and not into the leg with the bent knee (prob obvious)
