Should I cut my son's hair? (Pic)

Hi! My son is 20 months old and has curly hair. It is cute but can sometimes look messy and I find it hard to maintain. He hates me touching it! It's getting quite long now and I'm tempted to cut it in to a short back and sides, but worry he will instantly look like a "big boy" and that I will regret it!

I would give it a trim but not necessarily a short back and sides as I'm a sucker for curls.

Coriandersucks · 03/09/2020 20:47

I wouldn’t but I have a 2 year old with similar hair and I just love it. He’s my last baby and I can’t bear to see him as a ‘big boy’. I did trim his fringe over lockdown though just so he could see easier.

If you do cut it, make sure you save those locks somewhere they’re gorgeous!

Mellonsprite · 03/09/2020 20:49

Don’t cut it yourself unless you are a hairdresser!!
I did this and it was awful!
He will look older though, so best not to do it if you are totally against that.

Thedogscollar · 03/09/2020 20:49

I wouldn't it looks beautiful all those natural curls. He will be grown up soon enough for short haircuts.Smile

Itsrainingnotmen · 03/09/2020 20:49

Step away from the scissors op!!
Spray some kids detangler in it.

missmouse101 · 03/09/2020 20:49

If it's hard to maintain as you say, I definitely would. His comfort has to take precedence over sentimentality about curls.

Nanalisa60 · 03/09/2020 20:49

It’s lovely, leave it for a bit longer maybe until he starts nursery. I love baby curls they are so sweet. Plenty of time to be a big boy!!

Findahouse21 · 03/09/2020 20:50

Yes, as pp said I would definitely get it trimmed so that it looks neater. I think long hair on boys is fine (not to my taste) but it always seems to look completely unkempt

MitziK · 03/09/2020 20:50

Tangle Teezer and enjoy it whilst it lasts.

AnneLovesGilbert · 03/09/2020 20:51

Gorgeous hair, I’d leave it be!

MsEllany · 03/09/2020 20:51

I would give him a trim. Just do it curl by curl - literally just grab a curl and trim it down then do the next one. Just so it’s not so wild. I regularly trim my own curls like this.

Oysterbabe · 03/09/2020 20:53

I'd cut it. It looks pretty untidy.

BohemianDream · 03/09/2020 20:56

Dont you dare!

BigBlondeBimbo · 03/09/2020 20:56

My ds has similar hair and I have cut it. I have literally cut it, as in cut it myself and it was fine. I'm not a hairdresser, but I used to cut our older DC's straight hair as well, and managed to do so with no disasters. Luckily, curly ds still has his curls! They just grow back on him. He does normally go to a proper hairdresser, because I didn't feel confident cutting curly hair, but there wasn't the option a few months ago and it had gone a bit wild, so I did it myself.

Runssometimes · 03/09/2020 20:58

Tangle teezer! DS had hair like that but blonder and curlier, we didn’t cut it until he started school and never washed it with shampoo. He looked much older after the cut but he wanted it done as was getting annoyed at people commenting on what a pretty girl he was, so he wanted it really short. He was petite with very delicate features so I can see how people made the assumption.

My husband was devastated (And shed a tear) when it was cut as he loved the curls. That was the end of the blond and the curls forever though which we expected as all my family have straight dark hair but started off curly blonde. He now has thick brown hair which gets darker every year. I miss his cherubic curls.

If it’s annoying your DS cut it, otherwise I’d hang onto his lovely curls.

Thanks everyone :)

I would. My son had similar hair and I was really emotional about getting it done 🤦‍♀️ but it was soooooooooo much neater and easier to handle. When I look at pictures of him when he was younger I always think I should have got it cut sooner as it could look wild and i spent so much less time teasing dried food, boogies and other toddler gunk out of it.

However he did look like a big boy but I liked it!

x2boys · 03/09/2020 21:10

I wouldn't his hairs gorgeous,my son is 13 and had very straight hair as a toddler ,and now has glorious curls ,I do love curly hair .😍

ShimmeringIce · 03/09/2020 21:13

My DD’s is similar, I trim the back into a kind of stacked bob every so often as the front is still quite thin and it turns into a mullet! IMO curly hair is more forgiving to home haircuts

2020iscancelled · 03/09/2020 21:20

Don’t cut! Just maintain the curls a bit better...

Sorry not being rude but curly hair needs different care to look it’s best...

Conditioner or detangler in the bath and only comb when wet, give it a good comb out with conditioner on every few washes, don’t “rub” dry, just scrunch the towel upwards into the curls and leave to dry naturally. Refresh each morning with a few spritzes of water / detangler mix.
Avon have a great kids spray.

My LO has insane curls, I look after them properly And they are honestly beautiful. Gets compliments everywhere we go. Obvs I imagine he won’t want them when he’s 13! So I’m making the most of it now!

Scrapper142 · 03/09/2020 21:20

Don't cut

Body Care knock-off tangle teezer though. Fraction of price and better
