To think people need to stop moaning about schools’ Covid management

It’s been glaringly obvious that dc will not be able to socially distance when all are back, so why are people so surprised about this now terms started? We were told all along they we’re going to be in year group bubbles, and parents must realise 200 or so dc. I feel sorry for schools who have probably spent all summer working out one way systems, staggered start times etc only to have a load of parents moaning at them.

I think there are no 'good' solutions to this. Not going back to school is no good, bubbles are not great but they are the best we can do under the circumstances.

Fatted · 03/09/2020 20:01

Yup. Our head teacher has been keeping us updated all summer on the school's return plan. It's had to change daily in line with the authorities changing guidelines.

The schools are doing what they can. Just like everyone else. I wouldn't mind people complaining if they were actually social distancing and mask wearing etc themselves.

NotAKaren · 03/09/2020 20:07

YANBU. Schools are doing their best. School buildings and staff numbers have not doubled in size over the holidays. They cannot monitor every single movement in a secondary school to enforce masks and social distancing and also get on with their job of actually teaching. They have been through a horrible time with last minute guidelines, U turns and the exams fiasco. Schools need parents support and if anyone needs shouting at it is this farcical, incompetent government.

The people you should be blaming are Mr Johnson and Mr Williamson. The former should face criminal prosecution for manslaughter given his slow response to the pandemic, and the latter never hold a ministerial post again.

cardibach · 03/09/2020 20:12

They shouldn’t be moaning about it. A bit of support and agitating with the powers that be to sort it by having rotas to keep everyone safe would be appreciated though...

CitizenFame · 03/09/2020 20:17

YANBU. I'm personally sick and tired of everyone moaning about Covid restrictions. Yes it's unfortunate but we are all dealing with it. People should learn how to get a grip.

BrokenBrit · 03/09/2020 20:19

I feel so sorry for the head teachers and SLTs that have been put under so much pressure as a result of ever changing guidelines and no increased funding. Combined with their own fears and that of the teachers, parents and pupils, as well as trying to manage children who haven’t been in school for 6 months. It must be very hard.
Empathy all round is needed I think.

SallySeven · 03/09/2020 20:21

I'm glad my kids are back and I'm keeping us all away from older family members for the foreseeable.

MarshaBradyo · 03/09/2020 20:22

Are they moaning at them or on here mostly?

Hopefully just on here, I agree with you, there’s not much they can do.

Waxonwaxoff0 · 03/09/2020 20:24

YANBU. I'm not bothered personally as I'm not scared of Covid but there was no way social distancing could work in schools.

awaywiththecircus · 03/09/2020 20:24

Just finding it odd that parents didn’t realise their dc wouldn’t be social distancing. Surely if that was possible schools would never had closed.

I don't think people realise just how much time and effort has to be put into managing this. I spent 5 days in the holidays just rearranging my classroom due to the guidelines and I'm just an ordinary class teacher, not involved with the decision making stress. That's time that could have been spent planning and preparing for things that could have benefited learning instead.

Now in class we have to find new ways of teaching young children effectively in unfamiliar circumstances: no flexible grouping, limited equipment, staggered breaks, lunch in classrooms etc, all the while trying to support kids who have been out of school for months. And I'm at primary where it's probably easier to manage.

It makes you wonder if they have ever been in a school Hmm
