Do they mean shouting? Shouting in a really high-pitched voice? Literally screaming at another person? Confused

@Biancadelrioisback I don’t understand why you don’t understand why I don’t understand why OP doesn’t understand. Grin

@OwlBeThere

I don’t understand why you don’t understand what screaming is?
Because "screaming" has a very different meaning in real life to the one it has on Mumsnet.
SchrodingersImmigrant · 03/09/2020 18:54

@Biancadelrioisback and @OwlBeThere are you now screaming at each other? 😂

SchrodingersImmigrant · 03/09/2020 18:54
@SchrodingersImmigrant The kid looked like he wanted the ground to swallow him up. Every person within 100 yards was staring. I felt so bad for him and our Headmistress.
Oh poor him! I bet he is now surfing online for adoptive familyShock

I find some people say "they were screaming at me" when really they mean the other person disagreed with them, even if they didn't raise their voice. It's a very vague term now.

JorisBonson · 03/09/2020 18:57

To me, it's something you do at the Michaelangelo.

@OwlBeThere.... But.... I just don't understand why you don't understand why I don't understand why you don't understand why OP doesn't understand what screaming is??

SummerPoppies · 03/09/2020 19:03

Every time someone on here mentions that a woman has screamed at them, I have visions of the screamer taking a really deep breath before going purple and screaming something like ' WHY AREN'T YOU WEARING A MAAASK?!?!?
While the OP is almost blown over in the blast and dogs fall over six streets away.

BertieBotts · 03/09/2020 19:06

There is a difference between shouting and screaming. Screaming things or screaming at somebody is like shouting but when your voice goes past loud into that kind of grated sound similar to when you scream in terror.

If you have more than one DC you'll know what I mean - think of when one of them really winds the other up until they scream "GET OUT!!!" or "LEAVE ME ALONE!!!"

Adults tend not to do it although I will admit I've had my moments of screaming "SHOES!!!! ON!!!! NOOOOOOOOW!!!!" when under extreme stress Blush

BogRollBOGOF · 03/09/2020 19:20

In the real world, a high pitched shout.
In MN, it's probably talking while looking at someone funny. Which is awkward as in a masked up world all looks are funny looks from duscombobulated eyes.

Oh the number I times I talked to pupils in my normal voice (teenagers) and they shouted back "STOP SHOUTING AT ME!" Confused
They would have KNOWN if I was shouting at them!

D4rwin · 03/09/2020 19:39

Shrieking?

NiceGerbil · 03/09/2020 19:42

It's shouting surely. Do men scream things at people?

To me screaming is fae wray (waits to see if anyone enjoys that reference Grin)

Titsywoo · 03/09/2020 20:01

@SchrodingersImmigrant

Do you mean outside of MN or on MN?
Definitely on MN! People say so and so screamed at me for doing something wrong and the only way I would describe someone as screaming would be if they had completely lost it. I can't imagine anyone doing that for most of the scenarios talked about on here so just trying to work out if some people say scream when they just mean shout!

Ok this is what I thought but it's not something you would hear often is it? Comes up on lots of threads here each day.

Exaggerated language for effect or other reasons is sadly too prevalent these days.

Overuse of screaming is not the only example. Too many things are described as 'big', many people have 'literally died', more meltdowns than on a cheese toastie, for example.

VeggieSausageRoll · 03/09/2020 20:06

On MN I interpret it as the OP is being mild to moderately over dramatic about the story they're telling, probably with an element of exaggeration. I take it as there was a mild altercation.

NiceGerbil · 03/09/2020 20:25

I think it means raised voice/ shouting.

Do men scream? Or shriek?

SchrodingersImmigrant · 03/09/2020 20:31

It's the same like "someone hammered at the door" - knocked😁

I have never had stranger scream at me and I feel like I am missing out😂

BritWifeinUSA · 03/09/2020 20:50

There’s screaming, there’s literally screaming and there’s Michelangelo/Sistine Chapel screaming. All of them exist only on MN. Along with other extreme behavior.

QueenArseClangers · 03/09/2020 22:21

In our life screaming is ‘only allowed on rollercoasters or if a “baddie”tries to take you.’

Fucking hate this trend of describing a conversation in which one person speaks slightly loud as ‘screaming’.

CloudPop · 03/09/2020 22:58

Screaming - tends to cause people to literally shake and sob
