Would you bother applying? Does this put you off?

I'm on a few job sites and several employers have a paragraph as follows. "The (name of company) is committed to equality of opportunity in employment and we understand the benefits of recruiting a diverse range of people. We welcome and encourage applications from underrepresented sections of the community" if you're not in a minority group would this put you off applying?

OP posts:

Nope, just means they are saying they won't discriminate

Skyliner001 · 03/09/2020 17:49

Yes it would massively put me of applying for a company committed to none- discrimination 🙄🙄

BlueJava · 03/09/2020 17:49

No, I just assume they will all have this policy and apply anyway.

Skingaling · 03/09/2020 17:51

No, it wouldn't put me off.

FredaFox · 03/09/2020 17:53

No, it’s very common nowadays that companies actively promote that they don’t discriminate
Most now have policies to abide by
It’s a non issue to me, surely a positive thing? Discrimination covers gender and age as well as race and disability

Brainwave89 · 03/09/2020 17:53

No of course not. A bit surprised you are asking?

OscarWildesCat · 03/09/2020 17:53

It’s standard wording nowadays on job adverts, why on earth would this put you off?

user12642379742146 · 03/09/2020 17:54

Why the fuck would that deter me from applying?

NerrSnerr · 03/09/2020 17:54

Of course it wouldn't put me off. Haven't many employers done this for a number of years?

ShirleyPhallus · 03/09/2020 17:55

It would put me off

I only want to work for homophobic, sexist, disablist organisations where 98% of the workforce is represented by middle class, middle aged white men

Brighterthansunflowers · 03/09/2020 17:56

It should only put you off if you want to work for a racist, sexist, homophobic organisation.

It’s pretty standard wording these days I think. Maybe more so in industries which have traditionally been dominated by middle class white men to show that things are moving away from that image.

Plussizejumpsuit · 03/09/2020 17:56

Absolutely would not put me off. Why would it? What is your thinking on this?

Thatbliddywoman · 03/09/2020 17:59

No..I'd totally expect them to give me the job for being a dyke so the interview would be easier Grin Wink
No of course not. I'm struggling to think why it would?

CastleCrasher · 03/09/2020 18:00

No, it's standard wording. My employer uses it and has done for years

WendyHoused · 03/09/2020 18:00

No, it’s standard.

ZoeTurtle · 03/09/2020 18:01

Gosh no I wouldn't apply. I only want to work for bigots.

SnuggyBuggy · 03/09/2020 18:03

I bet even bigoted employers claim to have this policy these days.

SchrodingersImmigrant · 03/09/2020 18:05

Why do you think it would put people off? Is it because you think it means they are looking for someone specific so no point?

You still have to go through the process no matter what sex/colour/nationality etc. Protected characteristics can be used as a tie breaker to decide between candidates of equal merit, but nothing else really.

AzraiL · 03/09/2020 18:05

Just curious OP - what is it about the statement that implies that some may find it off-putting?

SoVeryLost · 03/09/2020 18:06

@SnuggyBuggy

I bet even bigoted employers claim to have this policy these days.
This, with bells on.

It’s standard wording and meaningless, if they are committed to diversity you’ll know when you meet senior management.

GreySkyClouds · 03/09/2020 18:27

No, it’s standard. Why does it bother you?

AIBU22 · 03/09/2020 18:28

Yes, I prefer the jobs I apply for to be highly discriminative based on race and gender Hmm

nevertakethechillpill · 03/09/2020 18:29

No.

Like everyone has said, its standard, especially in the public sector.

Wouldn't assume it was true either. Just like ' staff are our greatest asset', doesn't mean that they don't have shit managers who treat their staff like crap and are rampant bullies or incompetents.

FloresTorres · 03/09/2020 18:35

Is it the GMB union?
Well known for sexual harassment, reneging on a promised advice session on Mumsnet and rife with cronyism.
( but shit hot on making empty statements like this)

Ohtherewearethen · 03/09/2020 18:43

I think OP is wondering whether it means they are actively trying to recruit from a minority and so as part of a majority is it worth applying. Not that she only wants to work for homophobic, sexist, racist, ableist emoloyers.
