Accidently moved August holiday to wrong week in May.

We were watching cases rising in the country where we booked our August holiday so moved it to 2021 a week or so before quarantine was imposed. Was all getting booked up for 2021 as lots of people cancelling for 2021 so I booked the last week of May assuming it was half term. It's the following week commencing 31st May Shock! I've never taken the DC out of school for more than 1 day before and that has been very occasional. Not worried about DD2 as year 6 SATs will be out of the way and lots of people take DC on term time holidays in her school. DD1 will be year 8. So annoyed with myself but I can't take half term off anyway as I'm an accountant and it's month end. August was very nearly totally booked when I re-booked a few weeks ago so not much chance of changing. Would I be unreasonable to take the DC out for a week just this once as holiday is already booked and paid for? Our LEA have a policy of not fining so not worried about that.

I don't think you would be u to take them out for the week. Only thing is, if your y6 dc might be missing a residential or something after SATs?

Just take them. Life is too short.

You have made a mistake, please don't beat yourself up over it. I think on one occasion taking the DC out would be reasonable, assuming you cannot get a refund of most of the cost of the holiday.

Incidentally, why is month end always a no-no. Is your company that short-staffed? What if someone has the flu or any other illness?

HelplessProcrastinator · 02/09/2020 19:54

nosswith I work for the NHS, so yes to short staffed. I have a very niche role. I had a month off when my dad died but a world of pain to sort out on my return. I also don't take any of March or April so never an Easter holiday. Recruiting a new member of staff so should start getting some proper cover.

Schoolchoicesucks really good point. Her residential should have been in year 5 so I need to check the rescheduled dates.

Just change it to actual half term? Or even better midweek to midweek, will be much cheaper and you only need to take a couple of days off?

We've had to move our holiday from this year to next. Prices have increased hugely and our current 1 year old will have turned 2 (suddenly she goes from £80 to £1300 for next years holiday! Go figure!) making the school holidays no longer attainable as the price is even higher!! so we are taking my eldest out of school for 6 days. I've made sure sats are complete and spoken to him about the residential trip (if it even were to go ahead!) And he'd much prefer our family holiday. Yes I feel a bit bad taking him out of school but equally not left with huge amount of options. I think a lot of families will be in similar scenarios.

Choppedupapple I can't take the beginning of the month off as it clashes with financial month end. I'm always desperate for summer half term as March/April is insane at work and I can't take any of Easter off.

Have checked and school residential is in July so no issue there.

My main concern is Year 8 DC has ASD and will worry about breaking 'the rules'. I could probably play the 'quiet term time holiday required for SN child' card but never done that before. We were supposed to be going end of August as that is quieter for where we are going (locals back at school).

At my kids' secondary Y8 exams are just before or just after the May half term. If the same is true of your dd's school then it could be an actual problem (the school's not going to like it regardless).
