To think nine bedrooms is a bit much?

Someone I work with has just bought a nine bedroom house for two adults and one child to live in. They aren't having more children or having anyone else move in.

Just out of interest, how big would you go if money was no object? For me I think 5 or 6 just to have a couple of guest rooms but nine seems bonkers to me. It has enough space downstairs for a playroom and office so they aren't using them for that. Just thinking of all the bed linen makes me feel faint.

I can't see the appeal of large houses at all. Not for any reason!

When I win the lottery I'll have a flat in central London, somewhere like the Bloomsbury, and a small house with pool in the Languedoc.

I never want to host loads of people coming to stay, I can't think of anything worse.

randomsabreuse · 02/09/2020 20:08

In fantasy land we'd have 2 or 3 guest rooms - now friends have kids it's nice to have kids not in with their parents, or 2 single friends without having to shuffle kids around...

So if they have a big extended family, 9 doesn't seem that excessive - to host Christmas comfortably we'd need space for PIL, DH's sister (plus her DH) and their 2 DC. Minimum 3 guest rooms if we want any sleep... We need 3 rooms for reasonable sleep (DC1 needs a nightlight, DC2 needs pitch black🙈), add in a laundry/sewing room, a music room and a dressing room and 9 would be perfect!

locked2020 · 02/09/2020 20:08

Bedroom for me and my DP, one each for DC (3), one as a dressing room, office, junk/storage, guest room, play room. I could easily use nine (and probably more). Sadly, it's not a problem I'm likely to have!

GiveMyHeadPeaceffs · 02/09/2020 20:08

Honestly I think 6 would be my absolute max; 1 for me, 1 for DP, 1 for DS & 3 guest rooms...or 2 guest rooms and a bloody ginormous walk-in wardrobe Grin

fluffi · 02/09/2020 20:09

Do they have 2 offices downstairs or just one? Assuming its just one office downstairs and the playroom ...

  1. Bedroom Adult 1
  2. Bedroom Adult 2 (possibly prefer to sleep separately)
  3. Bedroom Child 1
  4. Office 2
  5. Guest room 1
  6. Guest room 2
  7. Gym
  8. Bedroom family member requiring long term care in future
  9. Sitting room / reception room for family member requiring long term care in future

I could probably also manage

  1. Guest room 3
  2. Child study room - everyone therefore has workspace in WFH & homeschooling scenario!
  3. Art / craft studio room
  4. Music room
  5. Games room / cinema room
  6. Storage / ironing / airing room
Grin

And a cleaner / housekeeper Grin Grin Grin

I personally wouldn’t think of saying “Oh, I need 9 bedrooms” if I won the lottery and was buying a house... but when I think of my family (3 siblings, 2 of them with large families, plus my parents) that’s actually exactly how many I’d need so they can all visit at the same time! Who knew Hmm

2018SoFarSoGreat · 02/09/2020 20:09

9 is a bit too much, although I know I could quite easily fill them with:

Me&DH
Dressing room for me
Guest room
Room for DGS's
Dressing room for DH

oh. Now I'm stuck. I guess 5 is all I'd need. We already have an office and family room downstairs. We'll stick with the 3 we have, which are Me/DH, dressing room for me (with daybed & trundle for DGS's) and nice guest room.

Desiringonlychild · 02/09/2020 20:10

My house growing up had 8 bedrooms. Parents Only had me and my sister but our grandparents lived with us.

Parents room
Parents study
Grandma's room
Grandpa's room
Sister and I shared a room
Home cinema
Playroom
Guest room

It was all a bit too big, but the rooms were filled. The only guests my parents ever had was my uncle and my DH so guest room was never used. And after a certain age, playroom was never used. My grandpa has died so now his room is empty 😭

baldrickslittlesister · 02/09/2020 20:10

@ekidmxcl

Are your friends Meghan and Harry?

Regardless I wouldn’t have more than 4 bedrooms. Houses take time, work and money to look after.

If you can afford 9 bedrooms you can afford staff?! I wouldn't want a house that large though, I'd want a double bedroom for each person, a dining room, large kitchen and two other reception rooms.
Cam2020 · 02/09/2020 20:13

Houses take time, work and money to look after.

I agree, I wouldn't have more than 5 personally - that's three spare but it depends on people's lifestyle. I'm anti social and don't want people in and out of my house all the time Grin

XingMing · 02/09/2020 20:14

We're planning to move from a spacious 4 bedroom house to something more suitable for a 60 something couple, and there is nothing that we have seen, in the areas that suit.

We'd like fewer rooms, but not small rooms, and just about everything we have seen advertised for older people seems to assume that you want a rabbit hutch with a warden. I explain that we want big living/dining/kitchen social space and two ensuite bathrooms and a guest annexe for a student son or visitors. No, sorry that's not what's in demand. I am coming to the conclusion that we need to build our own house.

GoingBackTo505 · 02/09/2020 20:15

Oooh I could use 9 bedrooms easily! One for us, one each for the two kids, two guest rooms, a dressing room, a games type room for when the kids are teenagers and want friends over and either an office or dressing room for DP too. Hmm. Maybe I'd need more than 9. I could put a gym in one as well.

NeopreneMermaid · 02/09/2020 20:16

Friend's parents bought a 9-bed house in the 1980s as their retirement fund. They both retired in their 50s when they sold it.

JudgeRindersMinder · 02/09/2020 20:16

Maybe their entire family are going to move in so they can be one household in case of full lockdown again😂

TorgosPizza · 02/09/2020 20:18

I'm sure my house is bigger than many would think we need. It felt big when we first moved in from a much smaller place. We had two guest rooms and a home office in the spare "bedrooms".

Gradually, we changed how we use the house to reflect the fact that the guest rooms were only rarely being used. At the moment, we each have a hobby/craft room, and the smallest spare room is a combination office and home gym. So now we have zero dedicated guest rooms-- just when I've decided it would be nice to have a spare bed to retreat to on nights when DH has a cold and is snoring up a storm!

I feel thoroughly spoiled with the number of rooms we have, yet I could still do with another! Blush

Titsywoo · 02/09/2020 20:22

I wouldn't want a house that big. A friend who has 5 bedrooms and two lounges says she doesn't use half of her house!

We have 3 bedrooms and I'd be happy with 4 so we had a spare and I'd like them to be bigger but our downstairs is a great size (we added extensions though). I couldn't find a kitchen and lounge as big as ours in another house with 3 bedrooms though so I can imagine the house is more about the downstairs space than upstairs for your friend.

DuckonaBike · 02/09/2020 20:23

I started reading this thread thinking that 9 bedrooms is ridiculous and now I want a 9 bedroom house as well dammit.

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 02/09/2020 20:28

I have a 10 bedroom house. It was cheaper than all the 5 or 6 bedroom houses we liked.

Welikebeingcosy · 02/09/2020 20:29

So I have two points of view on this- firstly is that since i moved into my two bedroom flat with a garden after a lifetime of house sharing it feels sooo overwhelming and i get frustrated with all the constant cleaning and having to think of decorating ideas for all the rooms- plus the living room is huge! But I have a lot of homeless friends so if I had loads of money I would want to build a big house for them all- however if I was that rich I could probably buy them all their own spaces and just get my small little cosy flat.

Thehogfatherstolemycurry · 02/09/2020 20:30

1 - bedroom for myself and dh
2 - spare room for when one of us can't sleep
3 - bedroom for dd
4 - chill out/music room for dd
5 - bedroom for ds
6 - chill out music room for ds big enough for 2 drum kits
7 - bedroom for adult dd + partner to come and stay
8 - bedroom for dgd
9 - storage room
10 - spare room for guests.

Wow that soon added up!
I wouldn't want to heat them all though!!

BlackeyedSusan · 02/09/2020 20:37

5: bedroom each for the children and me. and two small studies for the children to revise learn/crash when back from school.

pussycatinboots · 02/09/2020 20:37

I could live in a 9 bedroomed house quite happily with or without DH
It sounds about twice the size of ours and there's only us two in it. 🤷🏻‍♀️

BlackeyedSusan · 02/09/2020 20:38

currently we have two bedrooms. and a grand total of five rooms altogether (including kitchen and bathroom)

Chicchicchicchiclana · 02/09/2020 20:38

@TheCountessofFitzdotterel

Yes, less demand for that many bedrooms.
Frenchfancy · 02/09/2020 20:41

We have a 4 bedroom house and a 4 bedroom holiday cottage attached which we let out. We have had enough of sharing our garden so have decided that from next year we will stop letting. That will mean we have 8 bedrooms. I'm laughing at the people who think that having a big house means you have enough money for staff. We definitely don't.

We have 3 girls although 1 is away at uni and one is getting her own flat this week leaving us with 1 dd at home. We certainly don't need the extra rooms so the cottage will probably be shut up in winter then filled in summer with family and friends. I would love a walk in wardrobe but the logical room for that is DD1s room and I don't want he to feel like this isn't her home anymore. Maybe in a couple of years.
