To quit my job seeing as they have changed my working days?

I have been working in a care home two days a week which works around DH's job (it's reception/admin work, not care- for full picture). They now want to switch it so that I work one day at the weekend. I wouldn't have taken the job had I known weekends would be involved, that's family time as far as I am concerned. I like the job but I'm a bit annoyed they have just sprung it on me. Can they do that? AIBU?

@lifestooshort123 I just had to look up 'sacrosanct', thanks for teaching me a new word grin

You're welcome. Used to work with someone incredibly literate who would pick a word-for-the-day that we lesser mortals would have to introduce in a conversation with one of our customers - it had to be witnessed and make sense. He was a James Joyce fan and came up with some crackers! It made the days more fun somehow.

@lifestooshort123 Ooh I love a new word too. I bought DD a '500 words you should know' book. We discovered that querulous accurately described a girl in her year when they were a bit younger!

Thanks so much for all the advice. I haven't worked there long, just less than 6 months. I'll see how it all goes and update.

@lifestooshort123 that's very brave to have used the new words with customers, it's the kind of thing I like doing though! Anything to make life a little more fun!

@WonderWebbs I just had to look querulous up as well, think I might need that book!

Emphasise the childcare but not about being at home at weekends. A care home is a seven day a week place.

I would just tell them you cant (not won’t) do weekends and let them sack you if they really need that to be your working day.

@LuckyAmy1986 A stocking filler for my teenager, plus I have learnt a few new words too!

@DPotter

It doesn't matter what your contract states.

Your employer can seek to change your hours, day, place of work, provided they consult with you - advise you of their proposals, listen to any concerns you have and give sufficient notice (can't recall if this is one month or 3). But they can force the change- with notice. If you can't change (and it doesn't matter whether you have a frivolous reason or an absolute cast iron one) - they can make you redundant. You would need to check if they can just sack you - don't think they can, but worth checking.

If forcing the change through ie dismissal and re engagement, it's whatever the greater of the contractual or statutory notice period ie one week per year unless contractual notice is greater. As its technically a dismissal (but employee stays on new terms)

If employee consents to the change, notice is normally negotiated /agreed.
