is anyone taking citalopram and breastfeeding?

had bad experience with medication and breastfeeding in the past.
don't want to do anything that will disrupt breastfeeding again (that made me spiral)

but I cant go on like this

does anyone have any first hand experience with antidepressants/antipsychotics and breastfeeding?

I dont completely trust my doctor to tell me the truth (she has withheld information before incase it distressed me :-S)

I remember your other posts about not trusting your doctors. You really need to work with those caring for you in real life OP. If you won't trust the professionals or the information which is freely available on the internet I don't think faceless strangers will be able to provide much reassurance.

I did. I was spiralling too, taking the meds was the less worse option.

DrinkFeckArseGirls · 02/09/2020 13:40

Got moved to sertraline though and that was better. I don’t remember the details because it was 8/9 years ago but I think citalopram is the first go to option as it’s cheaper.

@DrinkFeckArseGirls
did you notice any changes? in baby or milk production or was feeding unaffected?
sorry loads of questions :-$
I'm certainly spiralling at the minute- did it help?

I do! I take 30mg a day and have done so since breastfeeding dd1 roughly 3 years ago! It has not (of what I can see) affected my children in any way or affected my milk supply. I have been able to progressively wean born girls down to 1 feed a day and milk has still been in good supply!

Anothermother3 · 02/09/2020 18:46

Sertraline is first choice as I understand. I did my research and spoke to some consultants. Definitely worth it for me.

DrinkFeckArseGirls · 02/09/2020 18:51

My milk production was unaffected. Nor was the taste I assume.

I’d push for sertraline though, I don’t remember what it was but I came off citalopram. Also the first one/two weeks tend to have side effects and you may feel worse before you feel better. Just stuck through it. Dry mouth, teeth chattering, erm, general lack of comfort. You may want to ply around with the time you take it, some prefer the mornings others prefer before sleep so they sleep through the side effects.

DD is now 9,5 and thriving as they say. Both at the time and now in hindsight it was worth taking the medication. whatever the impact of the medication in the milk supply, it was negligible in comparison with having a, erm, struggling mother.

The website is great. Lots of info on all types of medication including anti depressants in pregnancy and breastfeeding www.medicinesinpreg nancy.org/Medicine--pregnancy/

thank you everyone
very reassuing to hear from 'patients' instead of pushers doctors and nurses
yes I am starting to realise that taking the medicine might help
I hit rock bottom, , no where else to go but up hey?

I tried sertraline but I ended up literally picking my skin until I bled.

I did 11 years ago with DD, fed her til she was 2 and never had any supply problems. She was 10lb 8oz and ate a lot 😳 coming off was hard (very slow and still got withdrawal symptoms) but tbh I was never expected to come off them, but they stopped working as well and the side effects became worse. I was on them for about 8 years in total with a break for pregnancy and while they were working, they were fine.
