KWIK FIT scams and other car repair scams

Hi all. I came across an old thread from 2018 where someone had been charged £900 by Kwik Fit for work on their car, which was in the main un-necessary. I thought I would provide some simple clear advice to help people avoid being ripped off.

Firstly, do not use fast fit centres like Kwik Fit at all, because despite most people knowing they'll tell you your car needs un-necessary work done, not everyone knows this and thus get ripped off. Take your car to small garages, preferably one's which are recommended to you.

One of the biggest scams in the car servicing industry (a speciality of Kwik Fit) is to tell you that you need new brake pads and brake discs when you DON'T. They then charge you amounts like £350 to change your front pads and discs. Brake discs and pads can be bought from Euro Car Parts for most cars for under £70. Fitting them takes a maximum of 1 hour. Even if the garage supplies the parts, the bill for a set of pads and discs fitted to most cars should not exceed £140-£160.

Brake pads will not wear out quickly if you are an average driver. The front generally wear out about twice as fast as the rear because most of the braking force is at the front. My front pads in every car I've ever had usually last for at least 25-30,000 miles and the rears 40-50,000 miles. Unless you are a boy/girl racer, there's no reason why your pads should not last similar mileages.

As for brake DISCS, this is the biggest scam of all. Discs do not need replaced at all unless they are warped, very heavily scored and grooved, or their thickness has reduced to the minimum thickness recommended by the car manufacturer (which you can check by contacting a dealership). I have owned several cars which have covered over 70,000 miles and have NEVER had to replace the discs, so if a garage tells you you need new discs at lower mileages they're certainly ripping you off unless they can show you proof of damage. Damage is NOT light scoring or grooving, that happens to all discs with mileage.

Another scam used is to tell you because your pads are worn, it's best to change them AND replace the discs at the same time. This is utter hogwash. It's perfectly fine to put new pads on older discs. The new pads just 'bed in' to any slight grooving on the discs.

Bear in mind the mileages above when anyone tells you that your pads and discs could be needing changed. Avoid fast-fit centres and use small garages. Even with the latter, it's best to get quotes from at least 2 unless you have a good recommendation.

Hope this helps people to avoid being scammed.

I'm amazed the KF is still going, they had an appalling reputation thirty years ago! They're fitters, not mechanics, instead of repairing something they, and most others like them, simply replace the part.

mrsBtheparker · 02/09/2020 13:17

If you find a fault indicated on the warning lights system beware. We had an ESP light stay on, a VW, and our garage put in onto the diagnostic rig finding the fault which would be £250, a good garage that we trust. I went on a VW forum and found that this was a known fault that VW were fixing for free, so it's worth checking on line when possible.

This is a very timely and useful thread.thank you op.hobestly wish mumsnet did more advice threads like these from people in the know.

Dont know if your qualified to know op,but why would a car start making slight whistling noises every so often when driving?I'm worried and cannot afford big repairs .

thenightsky · 02/09/2020 13:22

Dealership told me all 4 discs needed to be replaced and were highly dangerous (only 16k miles on the clock). I said I was taking it for a 2nd opinion, and they responded by, oooh its far to dangerous to drive to another garage, even 200 yards down the road! cheeky fuckers.

Took it straight round to indie place next door but one, didn't tell them the back story, but just asked for them to check brakes as I thought I had a squeak, and, by the way, how many miles did they think I had left on the discs. Oh they said, discs are like new. 'Nowt up with em love'.

You don't need Bridgestones or Michelins if you are a normal driver. These are much more expensive than so called budget brand tyres and do last longer, but are not necessary for day to day normal driving. I have used budget brand tyres for decades and have never once had a problem with them.

Terrible advice, the two things you never skimp on are tyres and brakes. I agree that you don’t necessarily need the highest performance tyres Michelin make but decent mid range brands can be had which are significantly better than nasty budget ditchfinders and not much more expensive. If you want to see just how dangerous budget tyres are I suggest looking at some of the German tyre tests, particularly the wet braking tests. It comes down to unexpected events rather than individual driving style, when a kid randomly runs out in the road on a wet day you’ll wish you had the best tyres available, it literally is life and death. Add in the high wear rates and you could literally be changing tyres twice as often, it’s false economy.

I'm not a fan of Kwik Fit, years ago took my car to one, young bloke got in to drive my car onto a ramp, I think he assumed he was on a race track at the speed he went, just before crashing into one of the pillars. His boss wasn't thrilled when presented with the bill for repairs.

Calabasa · 02/09/2020 13:36

my tip, from a friend who runs a high-end garage... for new tyres, price check against blackcircles.com.

I've often found them cheaper, you can buy from them, and book into a local garage for them to do the fitting.. its often cheaper that way than buying through the garage themselves.

BarbaraofSeville · 02/09/2020 13:39

I wonder if you have an opinion on filling of tyres with nitrogen instead of normal air?

My work also has a company car tyre contract with Kwik Fit (I don't care, it's not my money) and the only time I've used it, I was intrigued to be offered a nitrogen fill for an extra couple of quid per tyre. I told them to talk to my company about it, because they were paying so it was up to them.

But reading up on it on their website, I learned that they used special 'nitrogen in a mixture with oxygen' which didn't go flat quite as fast, I think the reason was.

I was dying to ask what the difference between their special 'nitrogen in a mixture with oxygen' was compared with normal air, which is 78% nitrogen and just about all the rest is oxygen, but I wasn't in the mood for playing bullshit top trumps with the nice man at Kwikfit, so I just left it. But as I can't find it on their website, I'm now wondering if it was an April Fool?

chocolatemademefat · 02/09/2020 13:46

Thanks for the advice - I didn’t know any of this and my husband is no longer able to deal with these things so it’s good for me to know.

As for Arnold Clark - I’m now on my fourth car from them and have always found them to be very good. Maybe it depends on the branch you use.

lyralalala · 02/09/2020 13:54

Arnold Clark branches depend on how long they've been AC and what they were like before. If they were profitable when bought they leave them alone.

I worked for AC for 2 years when I was at school and college and when I think back on the shit that was dished out to a 16yo, the lack of health and safety and the scams with staff uniforms I can see why my Nana begged me to quit.

Bigdogsmalldog · 02/09/2020 13:56

@zingally

Regarding brake pads... Most cars are very clear when they need replacing, because you'll start to hear a bit of a squealing sound when you apply the brakes. :)
This is awful advice. By the time your brakes are squealing, you are long past needing your brake pads changed. You risk doing very serious damage and destroying parts of your brakes.
Itsallcrapnow · 02/09/2020 14:01

Audi dealerships services department are notorious for up selling when not required

I’m not sure that’s what the PP meant. Many cars (if they don’t have electronic wear sensors) are fitted with audible wear indicators which are sprung pieces of metal on the back of the pads. When the pads get low this piece of metal makes contact with the disc and makes a high pitched squealing noise on application, as opposed to the nasty grinding noise you get when the pads are shot and it’s metal on metal as you describe.

An even better tip for the best tyre deals is tyreleader.co.uk. Tyres are delivered to your home and then you pay your local fitter to fit them, I pay £10/corner for fitting and save considerable amounts.

silvercoin · 02/09/2020 14:24

Thanks for this OP I've definitely been scammed before. KF actually added on an extra piece of work when I went to collect my car after I'd already paid for other work and had to briefly return the car there. I don't know if it was KF Or the guy behind the till that did this but he said to me oh so you've also got xyz wrong and it will only be a tenner to fix it and I won't be long so I said oh ok then go ahead.

Unbeknown to him I didn't stay in the waiting room, I wandered aimlessly into the garage area and WATCHED him walk straight around another car very slowly and then start heading back to the waiting area.
I ran back back to the waiting area and he greeted me with an 'great so that's everything £10 please we can only take cash at the moment though' I set him straight in front of everyone else.

ElsieMc · 02/09/2020 14:33

Thank you for posting op but am worried after reading this. My old car is going in tomorrow for similar and also coil springs whatever the hell that is. They have quoted £450 plus VAT. I also had the head gasket done and that was £680 a year or two back. This failed after 18 months again and poor DH had to fix it because I couldnt afford to pay again.

This is an indie garage. I am just desperate to keep my car on the road because at the moment second hand cars are really dear and paying this is cheaper.

Last year a problem with the steering was an advisory but has not been mentioned at all this year. Generally I have trusted the garage and have been a customer for many years.

Takingontheworld · 02/09/2020 14:36

Interested to know what tyre for a renault kajaar that does 15k per year would be best. I've been paying 100+ a tyre for Michelin/ good year.. not sure what constitutes "average driving" though.

Elai1978 · 02/09/2020 15:17

Depends entirely on your tyre size but as you do a reasonable mileage I’d be sticking with one of the quality brands. Have a look on tyreleader and add £10/corner to work out how much you should be paying.

theemmadilemma · 02/09/2020 15:24

A good garage is a god send. I've used mine for 20 years and recommended it widely. They've also done the odd quick fix for me free over the years. It's nice knowing you aren't being ripped off.

RevolutionRadio · 02/09/2020 15:41

Not long after I started driving at 18 I used Kwik fit for brake pads a few months later I moved cities. I took my car to Kwik fit to check my oil and water levels etc as I had a long journey to do. They also told me I needed new brake pads as they were dangerously worn and they didn't want me to leave without booking it in again.

I explained that I'd had them done at a different Kwik fit branch and if they needed doing again so soon then the ones they had fitted must have been faulty. A phonecall from one Kwik fit to another and all of a sudden my brake pads were fine, I then wasn't happy that they had left me with 'dangerous brake pads' so they replaced them for free.

I've never used them since.

rslsys · 02/09/2020 15:57

Knew a guy who worked for KwikFit. They were told to use an oil can to squirt oil at the bottom of the shock absorbers when the car was up on the ramp. Then call the customer from the waiting area and show them the 'proof' that the shock absorbers needed replacement.

LemmysAceCard · 02/09/2020 15:58

Not all KF are crooks. The local one near me is a tyre and exhaust centre so doesnt do MOTS or brake pads etc. My son did his apprenticeship there and couldnt rate them highly enough.

The didnt rip anybody off only did work that needed doing, and as such they are always busy as the are known as an honest garage.

MondeoFan · 02/09/2020 16:04

@Itsallcrapnow sometimes a fan or a cam belt can make a whistling noise. Is it the faster you go the louder it is or just sometimes?

uisage · 02/09/2020 16:41

Arnold Clark are scammers. I bought a car from them and got the MOT+Service package. They rang me up telling me that I needed new discs and pads, quoting over £500. I queried it, they said they could get the price down using non Honda parts. I queried it further and they got to price down again to like £180 by ordering from 'the company they don't usually use' (i.e. they were too lazy to ring up the one they didn't always use).

She made out like I needed them done, I double checked whether it was compulsory or advisory - of course, it was just advisory. I told them to sack it.

Small garages can also be crooks, the one near me doesn't do the things you ask and then does extra things you don't ask for.

Chickenfingers · 02/09/2020 16:47

This seems a bit unfair. Not all Kwik Fits are the same, my local one has been incredibly helpful, even providing some services for free.

But I do agree go local when you can.

Witchend · 02/09/2020 16:56

Our KwikFit are great.
They are always polite, and do a number of things for free. They certainly don't tell you something is needed when it isn't.
They were also able to take time to talk to ds when he was younger and wheels were the best thing in the world.
