To send my kids to school with coughs if they’ve tested negative for coronavirus?

They tested negative on Tuesday for coronavirus but still have active coughs. They are perfectly well in themselves though, haven’t had any fevers just mild coughs. Is this okay? I’m not sure what’s meant to happen, as potentially they could have a cough for weeks!

@contrmary

Don't send them in if they have a cough. A cough spreads germs.

Day 1: develop cough, get tested
Day 2: result is negative for COVID because cough is unrelated.
Day 3: catch COVID and are symptomless. But you still have pre-existing cough so are coughing COVID germs around the place.

This is simply not the advice from the NHS or government. Made up “rules” don’t help anybody.

Of

Laminate the tests and send to the bloody class WhatsApp

I really dont understand all the people saying dont send them even with a negative test .... in that case what on earth is the point in testing? May as well not bother and save the country billions!

In fact, might as well just close the whole country down again. Can’t be too careful after all.

YABU. Symptoms = do not go in. Yes they were free of CV when they were tested, but they could've contracted it in between testing and getting results, and coughing will spread it. Sorry it's not what you want to hear.
This is possibly one of the stupidest posts I have ever seen on here. By your reasoning everyone would just stay in their houses and not go out for ever more because even if you test negative you might get it after you were tested. Don't be so bloody ridiculous. It never ceases to amaze me th sheer amount of stupid things that people spout on here.

Unrelated to going to school, but I have cough variant asthma, exacerbated by cold weather and other things. I won't be taking the entire winter off from work if I develop a cough- I'll test and go back if negative.
Mistressiggi · 04/09/2020 22:54

@HorridHamble (hamble wasn't horrid btw!) why would you not tell the school the results were negative? When we got ours I didn't need to tell the school till the next day but I called right away as I was sure the teacher would like to know if she'd been in close contact with a positive case.
I need to be off work if my dc are off; fine if I'm following government guidance but I can't make up my own rules.

OpenlyGayExOlympicFencer · 04/09/2020 23:02

@Emmelina

Schools are happy to take children with a negative test result, though you’ll probably be required to provide a copy of this as they are coughing . It really depends if they’re well enough to be there.
They're not allowed to ask for proof of negative test.
Whyisitsodifficult · 04/09/2020 23:08

@Itisbetter

I’d prefer people to stay home with their lurgies. I think it’s utterly antisocial to spread it through your schools and workplaces.
Ffs children need to catch germs to strengthen and bolster their immune systems. We can’t overly sanitise everyone and put them in a sterile bubble! I despair, children need to build up immunity to things.
Ameliablue · 04/09/2020 23:10

Coughs can linger for weeks so if they have no other symptoms, are well in themselves and have a negative test, they are fine to go in.

pushananas · 04/09/2020 23:10

If I keep my two youngest off with a cough they will be off until about January then back until March and off all summer so no, I wouldn't.

GwendolineMarysLaces · 04/09/2020 23:29

Don't national guidelines say anyone with a new, continuous cough should have a test, and should self-isolate until they get results. If negative, normal life can resume even if still symptomatic as presumed to be another cause for cough.

Hangingbasketofdoom · 04/09/2020 23:37

Whether they are allowed to ask or not, theres no reason not to provide it.

lambo88 · 30/09/2020 06:39

Hi everyone what was ur little ones symptoms...my little boy had a cold 2 weeks ago and it went for 4 days and came back and now he's got a cough...we think it's just a tickly one but worried about Covid but has no temp xx

Mindymomo · 30/09/2020 07:02

Depends if the cough is continuous that is dry, then get a test. Most colds turn into tickly coughs at some point.

lambo88 · 30/09/2020 07:25

@Mindymomo well it started as a cold then yesterday he couldn't stop coughing in the day and then it was bad and constant during the night...we think it's a tickly one but today is more barking...it's hard as he's only 2 so getting him checked this morning xx
