We live in an age when it's never been easier to find out information - by googling or asking Siri/ Alexa etc.

Yet it seems our local area Facebook groups and all my WhatsApp groups are full of questions which people could have easily (and probably more quickly) answered for themselves, rather than clogging up social media feeds.

Just today I've seen:

  • Is there a post office in the town?
  • Do M&S sell cloth face masks?
  • Anyone know what time B&Q opens?
  • Does the bus stop on XYZ road?

and in my Book Group WhatsApp

  • What's the date of the next meeting? - by someone who posted that 'the next meeting is xth Sept' herself about a month ago, with the book we'd chosen!

Is it laziness or stupidity or what? Why can't they just search for themselves?
AIBU??

Have you seen AIBU recently?

What is there to do in...? Does anyone have a recipe for...? How long do eyebrows take to grow out?

Spinakker · 01/09/2020 20:54

It's just laziness. Guilty of it myself sometimes !

Orchidsindoors · 01/09/2020 20:55

Yep..today someone put on our local fb "anyone know where I get the bus to next town and what the times are. Lots of responses suggesting she googles it. Also get annoyed at school related ones..
What's on the menu tomorrow?
What are the holiday dates?
All of which are on the school website.

Laaalaaaa · 01/09/2020 21:00

Attention innit.

CornflakeMum · 01/09/2020 21:06

I just find it so irritating, and it stops groups from functioning properly for the more useful requests.
There's a certain arrogance that comes with expecting other people to do very basic legwork/mental load for you, isn't there?

Drama llama or lonely?

I like this. Depends how diplomatic you're feeling tho.

user18534687433234 · 01/09/2020 21:14

Oh, and I have colleagues like this and it drives me round the fucking twist. It's laziness.

agododopushpineapple · 01/09/2020 21:16

Hmm on the fence - cloth masks - do they mean in your local M&S (e.g mine is small so doesn’t stock lots). Opening times haven’t been reliable on websites since start of covid.

The others are ridiculous though.

WhoWouldHaveThoughtThat · 01/09/2020 21:16

Yes I often wondered why I keep asking questions myself.
Does anyone know why I do it?

CornflakeMum · 01/09/2020 21:18

user that's brilliant! Can't believe I haven't seen that before!

I think this has been the favourite of my usernames Grin
Pawsin · 01/09/2020 21:23

I don't think it's laziness as it surely takes even more time than just a quick google search! I think it's just attention. The people I've seen that do it, then tend to reply to the answers with an attention-seeking reason/back story 🤣

McTav · 01/09/2020 21:29

I do think that online info is a bit unreliable at the moment, so I can understand that one. But in general, YANBU. I think some people don't know what to actually Google, or they think Google won't know about the post box at the end of their street.

But a lot of people would just rather ask out loud - DH is one of these. He will ALWAYS ask me before Googling something, even if there is no reason for me to know the answer.

Runkle · 01/09/2020 21:30

The amount of posts I've seen about when do schools go back? My Johnny is in Year X, when are they in? Hmm

Dhautumn · 01/09/2020 21:32

This is my pet hate. I am constantly complaining to my dh about it on our local residents fb page. More annoying people who ask the same thing which has been asked a hundred times.

NameChange84 · 01/09/2020 21:34

It happens on here too!

“do you have a link to that OP?”

“Is this in the U.K.? Never heard of it before”

“What statistics would those be?”

“if my coworker has Covid and I sat next to them but 2 m apart so I have to self isolate?”

“What’s a (insert brand name here)?”

Drives me mad. I always wonder why, in the time it takes to write a post, don’t posters just google? And expect other people to provide them with a link/definition/explanation/instructions? Bloody laziness.

HeronLanyon · 01/09/2020 21:37

whowouldhave 😂😂😂

MrsSpookyM · 01/09/2020 21:38

Sounds like my mum is on your Facebook.

lifesalongsong · 01/09/2020 21:39

@Spinakker

It's just laziness. Guilty of it myself sometimes !
But it isn't any less effort than googling and with Google you get an instant answer, why would you type the question on a Facebook page or in a group chat where you have to wait for someone to see the post and then be bothered to baby you by answering.

I don't get it either

thelongwayhome · 01/09/2020 21:40

I think some people are a bit lonely and thrive off posting on Facebook or in Facebook groups/Nextdoor.

And some people just don't possess the common sense to search something up themselves!

LEELULUMPKIN · 01/09/2020 21:43

It's one of my pet hates OP. I am on a lot of travel forums and the vast majority of the questions asked can be googled within 5 seconds.

It really grinds my gears!

I have come to the conclusion that it's a combination of laziness and being thick.

PastaForLunchAgain · 01/09/2020 21:46

Ye-ess ... but then again you also get the opposite thing, when you're asking something specific and some idiot comes along assuming the answer is super obvious. There's a bloke in my local FB group like this. Someone will ask something like 'does anyone know who can replace a watch battery, it's an antique my great-grandfather bought in 1902 and it's such-and-such a make' and he'll be along with 'just googled for you mate, watch batteries are all standard sizes now, take it along to Argos and they'll sort you out with one'.

Drives me fucking nuts.

daisypond · 01/09/2020 21:46

I’m not on Facebook, but maybe people just want to chat, hear their voices, especially if people have been isolated for a long time. It’s a bit of connection with the outside world.
